Common Market Restaurant Group Opens Yogurt Bar in Braintree

This spring, a family-owned business that has been operating in Quincy for more than four decades overhauled a Washington Street storefront, bringing to South Braintree Square self-service frozen yogurt.
The Yogurt Bar opened last week at 915 Washington St. and offers 12 flavors of yogurt and more than 50 different toppings, along with the top flavors of Brigham's Ice Cream.
By allowing customers to make their own concoctions, sold by the ounce, The Yogurt Bar can offer a less expensive treat than some more well-known yogurt places like Pinkberry, said Greg McDonald, a Milton resident and co-owner of the Common Market restaurant group.
Pinkberry, now with South Shore locations including the Plaza and Hingham, started in California, where McDonald said he went several years ago to first research adding the category to his family's restaurant group.
"Synergy-wise, it just kind of makes sense for us," McDonald said.
The first Yogurt Bar opened in 2011 at the Village Common Food Court on Willard Street in Quincy, joining the Fish ‘n Chicken, the Pasta and Pizza Caffe and the Healthy Kitchen. Common Market's other holdings include The Chowder House, The Cafe de Paris, and Darcy's Pub, all in Quincy.
The Braintree location – formerly an ice cream shop called The Sweeterie – is next to another new business, SouthSide Tavern, which opened earlier this year. McDonald said he looked at some 50 locations on the South Shore for the second Yogurt Bar and picked the Square for its central location. It is within walking distance of Sunset Lake, Thayer Academy, French's Common, St. Francis and other gathering spots.
"I really like the demographics of this square," McDonald said. "We like the energy. It's a business square."
