Families from across Milton visited the Milton Police Station on Wednesday, August 8, for the local National Night Out event. The open house featured kid-friendly activities and police equipment from around area departments.

National Night Out is a crime prevention initiative that was started 29 years ago by the National Association of Town Watch.

This is the fifth consecutive year the Milton Police Department has held the National Night Out. Previously, the department hosted the open house from 1997 to the early 2000s.

Classic and current Milton Police vehicles like a 1970s cruiser, a MPD horse-drawn sleigh and modern day cars were on display Wednesday.

Other municipalities and police departments also brought vehicles and equipment. The Boston Police, Norfolk County and the Transit Police Bomb Squad were all on hand.

Food and kids rides were also a hit with the large crowd on Wednesday.

The Milton Police Department posted the following thank you message on its Facebook page this morning: "Thank you to EVERYONE who attended National Night Out at our station tonight. The crowd was unbelievable, perhaps the largest ever at 2000 strong. We are grateful to our elected officials, many law enforcement partners, other government agencies and especially the citizens of our wonderful community. Each of you help to make the job of protecting Milton much easier. We hope you are as proud of your police department as we are to serve you. Thank you all so much and enjoy the rest of the summer!"
