Fontbonne Softball Starts Season with Two Conference Wins

After a opening day trouncing of Mt. Alvernia and an extra innings win over Notre Dame of Hingham, the Ducks dropped their first game on Thursday.

The softball team started the season with a pair of impressive wins in the Catholic Conference before dropping their first game of the young season on Thursday, April 14.

The Ducks started out the season with a 23-5 romping of Mt. Alvernia on Friday, April 8. Senior standout, Taylor Shepherd, led Fontbonne’s potent offense in the opener with three homeruns and six RBI.

On Monday, the Ducks battled back from a late game deficit to take a 6-5 victory from Notre Dame of Hingham in eight innings. The Ducks trailed 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh when they knotted the score at 5-5. In the bottom of the eighth, Edie Richardson cracked a walk-off single, scoring Shepherd.

On Thursday night the Ducks hosted conference rival Ursuline Academy at Cunningham Park. Ursuline beat Fontbonne to the tune of 4-3. Ducks coach Kathy Berardi said her team came out flat after the exciting win over Notre Dame.

Though the team struggled, Shepherd had another notable game. She belted two singles and two doubles in four chances at the plate.

The Ducks will now take their 2-1 Catholic Conference record back to Cunningham Park at 3:45 p.m. on Friday when they host Oliver Ames
