SOUND OFF: Mitt Romney and the Republican Convention

What did you think of Romney's speech and the convention? Will you vote for him in November?

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney accepted the Republican nomination for President of the United States on Thursday night.

Romney gave a speech that included a more personal view of his life as well as focused on adding jobs, criticizing President Obama’s policies, repealing Obamacare and promoting his business background.

Romney did not discuss his experience as governor of Massachusetts during the nationally-televised speech.

We want to hear from you – what did you think of the former governor’s speech? What did you think of the convention? Were you swayed in either direction after watching the proceedings from Tampa? From his experience as governor of the commonwealth, are you more apt or less apt to vote for Romney?

Let us know in the comment section below.

The convention was a true American rally for what the United States can be again. Clint , Mitt, Ryan , Rubio and christy were absolutely fantastic!! Each one was spot on and really hit it out of the part! However, you won't find one dem admit it. I can't wait to see Ryan and biden face off haha!

Amen, Sharon!

Ryan will wipe the floor with that Bozo Biden & not even break into a sweat; Biden, however, will be sweating little bullets. Too bad Biden doesn't have the good sense to know he's in way over his head. Sarah Palin cleaned Biden's clock 4 yrs ago.

I, too, enjoyed the GOP convention. I'm a big Clint fan & thought he was hysterical . Did you notice there was a portable Teleprompter set up in front of the vacant chair [as in "vacant suit, lol] as a prop? Clint spoke without notes, unlike the invisible "person" Clint was "talking" to who cannot speak coherently without his beloved Teleprompter.

I liked the speeches by Romney, his wife & Ryan, great Americans all, but Rubio impressed the daylights out of me. One day he will be President. I hope I live long enough to see that day.

By the way, Sharon, I like your other comments here but I no longer give a hoot that I might possibly offend someone's delicate sensibilities if I accidentally use a "wrong" word. (I also don't intentionally use "normal" offensive language.) I've had it up to my eyeballs with political correctness. People need to grow thicker skins and get over all that nonsense before it restricts all speech on the planet. The PC police have gotten completely out of hand.

Seriously??? I agree with Plymouth Resident! A lot of smack but no substance!! I found the RNC to be totally contrived and both his son and wife were used as pawns to make him likeable to Latino and women voters... Not to mention that Romney did nothing good for Massachusetts and he was out of the state campaigning for his first go-round for the presidency. Did you notice how he never mentions being the Governor of Massachusetts and tries to distance himself from Romneycare - the precurser to Obamacare!!! At least with Obamacare, birthcontrol is cover. I guess he thinks we are all stupid and forgot about how useless he was in Massachusett!!

If someone says its Bushes fault I would like to remind them that the congress was all DEMS so hummm whats that telling you about all the decisions back then? All I can say is GOOOOOOOOOO MITT!!!!!!! If anyone listened to the what was said it would be clear, if you want to see what Obamas America is about please go see the movie out now about where we're going. Kelly, was the recent RNC convention the first one you've ever seen? You're somewhat naive. All conventions are slick productions to attract voters. They are all basically giant commercials for themselves.

I don't know your age, but if the best you have to say about Obamacare is free birthcontrol, I feel sorry for you. Obamacare=Socialized medicine administered by appointed, NOT elected, political hacks that need not even have an once of medical knowledge. Do you want some unknown bureaucrat deciding what care is "best" for you, your kids, your parents, your grandparents or do you want your doctor making the decisions? Will you wait patiently, like they do in Europe & Canada, six months or so to have a test such as an MRI? You could die while waiting. Wonder why Canadians stream over the border for medical care & why people fly into the US all the time for treatment? If Obamacare is so wonderful, why have many of the largest Unions requested waivers to get out of it? Duh! Wake up!

Name me one Federal government program that actually works as promised, on budget, without cronism, waste & fraud, in a timely fashion without tons of red tape? You want to turn over our collective medical needs to a government that could screw up a two-car funeral?

By the way, buy your own birthcontrol; it's about $8-$10 a month. Better yet, let the man help & he can buy what he needs at any gas station or convenience store. Since when are women 100% responsible?

We have to be so careful on what words are used because someone might be offended. We have people looking for handouts rather than do for themselves. Obama is a sweet talker but thats all he is, he says the same thing over and over and over and does nothing but fly here and there and have parties. He wants everyone to be on the same level??? Really why should i work hard for what I have and expect to give it away to someone who is too lazy to make it on there own? He wants us depended on goverment and other countries. He has distanced us from our allies , and ones we had for decades but he took care of that. He complained about the war in Iraq but sent us into Afgan, does he remember 9-11? He took credit for taking out Bin Laden but that was in the works before he was in office. God does anyone remember history? Or is that selective? I was a dem but I saw the TRUTH.

I thought the convention was a positive one.My wife was the most impressed. When I did watch,I viewed it on several different networks. The negatives came from most of their critics. The array of diverse speakers and the "content" of which they spoke was right on. I would like to hear more from the Governor of New Mexico..she needs to be heard more. Gov Romney was/is correct the failed policies of this administration have not and will not work. I will watch the DNC coverage to see how they deal accurately with the Obama's adminisitration's policies of the past 4 years

Lets see where we were four years ago. Losing 600,000 jobs per month, on the edge of the cliff of a depression with threat of unemployment greater than 25%, the Automotive industry about to go under with the loss of hundreds of thousands of more jobs, stock market at around 6000, and a republican congress whose main objective is to be sure Obama was a one term president by refusing to support anything he offered, including bills they were once for. Brown was elected in 2009 giving the Republicans the numbers they needed to prevent bills from coming to a vote in the Senate. We have had the growth of the Tea Party, whose members in congress don't believe in any compromise!!!
Has President Obama been perfect? No. However he also doesn't deserve all the blame that is being dumped upon him, often by mistruths of the actual facts.

OllieD you may want to check your "facts" a bit before you go spouting them off. I'm not sure where you are getting those numbers from but they are dead wrong. By stock market I am assuming you mean the Dow Jones which was not great in 2008 and there was a market crash but it started at around 13k in January and fell to about 9k at the end of the year. It didn't get close to 6K until March of 2009 and never went that low (that would be after Obama). So we lost 600,000 jobs per month? For all 2008? All of the 8 years Bush was in office? Probably lost a total of 8.8 million jobs from 2008-2010 if you are saying in just 2008 alone we lost 600k jobs a month that would be 7.2 million in just that year so by your numbers we have had a stellar recovery losing only 1.6 million jobs in the two years following but somehow the unemployement rate went from 7.8 in January of 2009 and up as high as 10.0 in October 2009 now sitting at 8.3 in July of 2012. Now lets talk about the supposed Republican majority in Congress. From 2006-2010 there was a Democratic majority in the House in Senate. That means there were two years under Obama with a Democrat majority how exactly did the Republicans stop everything that Obama wanted to do? Also just to add to the many mistakes you have made in your comment Scott Brown was elected during a special election on January 19th 2010 and he wasn't seated until February 4th 2010.

OllieD

9:02 am on Saturday, September 1, 2012

Couple of more things. The Republican Convention was, in some ways, built on lies. "You Didn't Build It" was taken out of context and was NOT what his speech was about. All fact checking organizations agree to this. Obama is NOT taking away work for welfare, rather giving Republican Governors what they asked for, the right to use their own programs to achieve a superior number of welfare folks to have jobs. Obama didn't apologies to the "World!!" Obama is NOT taking 716 billion dollars from Medicare patients, rather from insurance companies and hospital reimbursements (which, I heard, they agreed to as the support for Obama Care will provide more patients to make up the difference. The "middle class" has NOT had a tax increase under Obama. If so, please let me know what it is!

To sum up, I, for one, am tired of misquotes and mis-statements of facts by the Republicans, and to be fair also from the Democratic party. The upcoming election could well be the most important one in generations, and could well map the future of this country for many future decades. Vote as you will, just please research both candidates and make your vote a informed one.

Hi Ollie . . . good to hear from you. I couldn't agree with you more . . . you nailed it square on. Romney is all hat and no cattle . . . all promises, no substance and numbers that don't come close to adding up . . . plus his foreign policy pronouncements are jingoistic and still stuck in the cold war. I think folks are smart enough to see that . . . and also wise enough to see that Obama has done the very best he can with a totally obstructionist Congress that rom the night of his Obama's inauguration swore they would do all they could to make Obama a one-termer.

Last time I checked I gave birth to 2 children not 100's of thousands! My husband and I TAUGHT them to do for themselves. We aren't rich but we are comfortable by living within our means. Obama is an business idiot but a great party planner. The dems keep promising the freeloaders handouts and well with the America they are designing , those are the growing masses who would vote for him (besides throw back hippies). Sharon ... Amen to what YOU said, brilliantly so!! I'm right there with you. My parents worked for everything we had and what they gave to us and taught us to do the same. Too many rely on handouts and getting things the easiest way possible. If we ever did anything wrong, we knew a spanking was coming and we'd try hard NOT to do that ever again -- we learned from the spanking AND we didn't threaten to turn a parent into authorities for the spanking!
We, this country, SO desperately needs a change, a turnaround ... another 4 years of what we've endured will not do.
That saying about "the devil you know is better than the devil you don't" -- well, we know both "devils" in this case, and we've got to give the other a chance and hope he can help change things for the better of the country!

Don't watch conventions...for either party...they are full of rhetoric and statements taken out of context. Electioneering has become big business and is causing so much contention that it is turning into hate and violence. I blame the candidates and the super pacs. The supreme court has allowed this country to become an oligarchy...the rich will buy the election. Congress is behaving like a bunch of schoolboys who haven't learned to compromise and BIG GOVERNMENT is trying to convince the populace that Medicare and Social Security (which we paid for) are entitlements....when that same BIG GOVERNMENT has bigger and better entitlements than anyone. And one word about the affordable care act...it may not be perfect but it's the best they seem to be able to come up with...as someone who worked in the health care industry for 30 years I know what I'm talking about...the health care system in this country is broken badly and will bankrupt this country if something isn't done. If you think it costs more to insure people h it does to subsidize them (for they WILL get care when they are sick. It is illegal to turn someone away from an emergency room where the cost is astronomical, and you are paying the bill) you aren't dealing with reality. The waste alone would scare you. And to those of you who call our President a traitor just because you don't like his views, SHAME ON YOU.

"And one word about the affordable care act...it may not be perfect but it's the best they seem to be able to come up with..."

I have an idea. Before we roll out this nearly 3K page law, how about we try it out on a select test group? This group can follow & use all the rules/regulations so they can iron out any bugs on anything that doesn't work.

I propose we let everyone who lives/works in/for the WH, elected, appointed, general employees, everyone in/for the House & the Senate, all the employees right down to the janitors. Just to round out the group, we throw in everyone appointed or otherwise employed in the Supreme Court be part of this trial run. To be fair & not limit this test to the Washington DC area, all office, staff, etc employees in Senators & Congress's home office(s) around the US will be included. All family members of this group will be participate. No exceptions, no waivers for anyone for any reason. I'm sure all of these people would be more than willing to help their country with a difficult program; they are all our "employees", drawing checks from the Federal Government, thus our tax dollars.

I think four years or so should be enough time to get everything ship-shape & ready for all of us. To assist the group we can set up an 800 Help center like we have for Social Security/Medicare with unlimited room for callers to sit on hold forever or roam around endlessly in voice-mail jail.

How does this sound?

Things to remember about ScottBrown

*****Brown voted to limit birth control access. He co-sponsored the Blunt Amendment, which would have allowed an employer or insurer to deny coverage for birth control and any other essential or preventive health care service that he or she finds objectionable.

*****Brown voted and continues to advocate for the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, which would take away access to preventive health care for millions of women across the country.

*****Brown voted to cut funding for essential preventive health care when he voted for HR1, a budget resolution that would have cut funding for Planned Parenthood and the Title X family planning program last year.

Amiability, kissing your wife, doing laundry, and having two daughters are not qualifications for Senator.

Jared -
Always glad to be corrected. You are correct - at the time Obama was sworn in the market was around 8000, to drop to 6626.94 on March 6th, little over a month since Obama became president. Not a heck of a lot of time to turn things around figuring normal lag time for economic policy to take effect. It has been way above that level since then. Another way to look at it is that the DJIA was at 10,646 on January 2, 2001, a few weeks before Bush took office. When he left, it was at 8,077.56, a decline over eight years of 2,569. The market, during Obama's term to date, shows an increase of 5013. I, for one, would rather see the market on an upswing than a downswing. Perhaps you like to play shorts.

Regarding the Senate. I don't challenge the date Brown was seated at all, at near the beginning of Obama's SECOND term. One of the things Brown ran on was his vote would permit the breaking of the "filibuster proof democratic hold" and allow the Republicans to filibuster bills, which they have done more during the past two plus years than any other year. Actually, with the "blue dog" democrats, as the party does allow someone to vote their convictions, they had members of Obama's party voting against him whereas most times the Republicans voted as a pack of dogs following their leader whose stated goal was to make Obama a one term president. A policy that may very well work at the cost to the country.

OllieD-
You are also correct, however the market was at a high of over 13K in January of 2008 and did not crash until the Lehman Brother debacle in September of 2008. Still an upswing for most of Bush's 8 years. Obviously 9/11 caused the markets to tumble 8 months after Bush came to office. I am sure as an intelligent person you are not going to blame Bush for that.

On your second point about Congress. A mark of true leadership is the ability to rally ones own troops as it were and to have the oratory skill to sway the other side to your cause. Lets be honest all members of congress are duly elected by their constituents and as such hold the values of said people and their job is to represent them. That being said congress is for the most part a 50/50 split and if a policy/law can not be passed without some of the other sides vote is it really the will of the people.

Jared -
I could comment on a number of warning signs given to Bush's administration regarding a threat of attack however I don't want to get off subject. The market rebounded from 9/11. I will put blame on Bush's economic policy along with his majority in Congress in funding two wars and a massive addition to Medicare without paying for same. If you are not going to blame Bush for the market crash after 9/11, then how do you blame Obama for the market crash for errors made and a recession due to policies of Bush's and past administrations.

As far as congress, we both know that with the dogmatic following of party lines currently being followed by both parties in congress, what the "people" want is not really an issue. Polls indicate that the majority of Americans want some of the tax loopholes closed for the upper 1% however the Republicans in congress refuse to consider any tax increase. In order to be a orator, one needs someone willing to listen, and that can lead to compromise, however I fear those days are gone. Rather we are in the period of time where the philosophy of those in congress is "my way or the highway." Further, in most cases in the Senate, it now takes a 60 vote majority in order to pass a bill, not 51%. I believe the real guilty party for the lack of greater improvement during the past four years lies with Congress, not Obama, and the loss of the art of compromise.

I would like to add that I come from a military family , my husband 35 years (launched for 9-11 and the shoe bomber), my son 6 years (current), my father 30 (ww2, korea, vietnam) and my brother in law (vietnam), I have to say that from my perspective he's put our troops in harms way by cutting the funds for the military . The jets are need to be replaced , like a old car you can fix them up only so much. He nixed the much needed equipment that could handle desert terrain . However, he can fly his wife to see play on broadway for millions of dollars , host parties every week , send his daughter to mexico for spring break (seriously does he realize how old she is??) which cost us millions. He uses Air Force One as his personal taxi cab which cost you and I millions but funding the military? Hes unbeliveable. Yeah hes for the little people alright. Yeah I can see how well he can relate to that poor woman living in squalor (cept' his aunt in the projects who i might remind you is illegal)(geeze is all his relatives illegal?) Yeah he can relate to the Veteran alright , shake his hand , pat his back but God forbid he gave him the equipment to get the job done. hahahahaha gosh its like a bad movie hahahaha okay now I cant stop laughing, the same reaction i get when he opens his mouth . Might I add that regards of the Air Force Plane, so has W. Bush and his dad, Clinton, Reagan, Carter, etc. Seems to me that Bush's daughters would get in trouble in bars and have the secret service bail them out.

Please cite your sources that Obama has cut the military budget in areas that have put our troups in trouble.

Now it seems to me, if my memory is correct, that your candidate, Romney was absent for a lot of his last two years as governor going around the country campaigning for President. I hope you don't consider that is OK?

2. one should not lump everyone together. I, for one, am a registered Independent, who for this election cycle is more than ready for our country to go in another direction. I vote for the person, not the party affiliation.

3. I don't "hate" anyone; I disagree with some people's point of view. A difference of opinion hardly rises to the level of hate. Comments like yours simply imply you are applying your personal thought processes to others.

4. I usually choose not to respond to comments like yours. It is quite obvious you do not want a conversation, nor do you wish to be open-minded and listen to other's opinions. It's like trying to argue with a drunk, a complete waste of time & energy.

5. I further don't usually respond to the nearly cult-like group-think mentality of lemings who do nothing but regurgitate the DNC talking points & the spout the biased left-wing drivel made by the cheerleaders on MSNBC trying to pass as a "news" outlet. Are you unwilling or unable to express a well-thought out personal opinion, thus using relying on the Dem chant in place of personal intellect?

Mr. Obama campaigned for the job, telling us he could fix this & that. He cannot now say "I didn't know how bad things were..." He was either naive or hadn't done his homework. It's time to give someone a chance.

It's the "republikan way !!!" I would recommend that you get some facts AND a heart. The Watchman
