SOUND OFF: President Obama and the Democratic Convention
What did you think of Obama's speech and the convention? Will you vote for him in November?
President Barack Obama capped off the Democratic National Convention with a speech that highlighted his foreign policy wins, health care reform and immigration reform on Thursday.
Over three nights, Democratic leaders took aim at Republican nominee, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, and his running mate Congressman Paul Ryan. A number of Massachusetts Democrats spoke at the convention, including Gov. Deval Patrick, Congressional candidate Elizabeth Warren and Senator John Kerry.
After last week's Republican National Conventon, we asked readers to tell us what they thought of the convention and Romney.
Now, we want to hear from you about the Democratic convention. What did you think of the President's speech? What did you think of the convention? Were you swayed in either direction after watching the proceedings from Charlotte? Who are you supporting in November?
Let us know in the comment section below.

BHO accelerated the debt rates of the hapless GWB by adding 6 trillion to our gargantuan debt burden. His proclivity for bailouts, subsidies and transfer payments, as well as imperialist wars and a humongous national security state, makes him a star of statist politicians.

Regarding the convention, unsure who will win the election however as far as organization, excitement, quality of speakers, and general overall management, the Democrats sure put on a better convention.

Are you serous! Their convention was all about Womans sex & voting on wether God was accepted! There is NOTHING good about the Obama administration & the slow distruction of our economy & freedoms! He wants BIG GOV & control of our lives! Socialism NEVER has worked & that is NOT what our Founding Fathers intended. Obamas founding fathers were communists...we're screwed if this Marxist gets in again! Explain THAT to your grand kids!! He is full of False hope & LIES! Four years of blaming others for what he intended to do just doesn't cut it. He has a plan, but it's not to help US or the USA!!

He was an impressive speaker at the convention 8 years ago. Then again 4 years ago, then again when he was elected. Unfortunately, his accomplishments have not been impressive. Before someone brings up Bin Laden, just remember that was a military operation started by the previous administration and had overwhelming public support. Not exactly the personal accomplishment the DNC would have us believe.

Lets see what Obama walked into ....an almost completely collapsed financial system, a devasted housing market, and not 1, but 2 wars. That the country didn't go completely under is a miracle. No incoming president in the HISTORY OF AMERICA ever had to face so many crisis' at one time. The FACT that housing sales hit a 7 year record high in July and the stick market just crossed again over 13000 proves that not only did President Obama save our economy, he turned it back in the right direction. Of course, we are Americans, and we want prosperity and all of it's benefits right this second. If you believe Mitt Romney is going to make that happen, I got a car elevator to sell you.

Let's take a look at what our President did when he had a majority in both houses of Congress: he did not present and champion a bold financial recovery and jobs plan, he opted to centralize 1/6 of the economy with his ObumaCare monstrosity. BHO is a statist ideologue. He opted to use the crisis to centralize more power in the federal government. As Bob Woodward shows in his new book, BHO refused to consider an alternative to his pet statist project, as recommended by Rahm Emanuel and others, he steamed ahead and handed design of his monstrosity to the statists in Congress. He walked away from economic recovery and jobs in order to fulfill his ideological dream. Shameful. Also, not very smart, if he had succeeded with a bold economic plan, he would be cruising to re-election, and very well might be n a position to dictate a health care takeover.

"Fool me once shame on you; fool me twice shame on me" Talk is cheap and we heard it all before. The measure of his performance is what did he promise and what did hw deliver, Obama promised: 1) To reduce our national debt by 50%: Failed. He actually increased it 50%. 2) To reduce unemployment to under 6%; Failed. We sit at 8.1% and the is grossly understated give the million of people who left the jobs market and are no longer counted because they are off the unemployment rolls. We are atually at around 17% unemployed 3) to make Jobs his #1 priority: Failed; we has 23 million people out of work and folks the medium income dropped $4000 per year. 4) To close Gitmo; Failed. 5) To reform immigration laws; Failed. 6) To end the war in Iraq; Successful. Now these were his promises to us. That is how I measure failure or success, not soothing oratory and rhetoric the pan empty. Who in God's name wouldn't like to hear, "I will give everybody, every constituent group everything they want". It just is not reality people. And speaking of God, removing God from the Democratic platform, are you serious and see the floor arguing and scene that took place when trying to vote it back into the platform. What a mess that was. Reality is life is not a fairy tale. Life is sometimes hard and unfair and that is the reality we live in. Fooled once not twice.

Ok, lets take each argument one at a time.
o reduce unemployment to under 6%; Failed. We sit at 8.1% and the is grossly understated give the million of people who left the jobs market and are no longer counted because they are off the unemployment rolls. We are atually at around 17% unemployed.
A. Ok, let's take into account the fact during the summer and fall of 2008 before Obama got into office, the financial sector experienced the greatest losses in their HISTORY. Business gets their money from Wall Street and if there is no money, there is no growth. In fact, there is massive retraction. All due to Bush 2 de-regulation of the financial sector. Bush let the gamblers run amok and we all lost. Great job GW. BTW, Obama created 4.5 million private sector jobs since 2008...more that his predecessor did in 8 years.

A. What happened to 1 and 2? Republican math at work I guess.
Again, the stock market drives the the labor market and to a lesser extent, the housing market. When the stock market nearly destroys itself, it takes a while to fix things. Your argument was addressed by Clinton Wed. night. "We made the mess, Obama didn't clean it up fast enough, so give us another chance to make a mess again" Fact is there has been steady job growth for the last 30 months. Sure, we'd all like it to be faster but since Republicans made this heap of dung, they are in NO position to complain about the recovery speed.

4:) To close Gitmo; Failed.
You got me there. Both Dems and Repubs blocked that. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010/dec/8/congress-deals-death-blow-gitmo-closure/?page=all
So you can't blame Obama on that one...not even a little.
5:)To reform immigration laws; Failed.
Again, talk to the Republican lead Congress.

6) To end the war in Iraq; Successful.
Wow, nice of you to give him credit for something.
Now, I am no sycophant. I got some real problems this administration not clamping down on Wall Street harder and not getting better concessions from the auto makers to get jobs back from Mexico. But I stepped back and saw what Obama got dropped in his lap. If you know history, you know that Hoover pulled the same thing on FDR. FDR blew it and the great depression lasted a decade. This was a far bigger mess that what FDR got and 4 years later, the stock market is already approaching an all time high and house purchases are at their best level in 7 years.
All of this stuff is an undeniable fact. Obama did an excellent job with the situation he was put in. If you can't acknowledge that, than you just have an axe to grind.

It was amusing to watch the Democrat apparatchik at the podium call three times for a vote in favor of God and Jews. The rabid Dem delegates shouted down the inclusion of either in the platform. Finally, the apparatchik gaveled the motion passed as the nays drowned out the yeas. We are dealing with a political party that has veered so far Left that public health requires a quarantine.

Michael, I don't see any proof of your statement about the Dems being extreme left. Obama bailout corporations in the finance and auto industries. That's not left, that's right wing behavior. Obama has continued to pour needed resources into the armed forces operations overseas, just as Bush 2 did. That is a right wing staple, not left. If your going to argue against democrats, make a rational and REAL factual argument and stop repeating the republican mantra. Talk like you actually did the homework.

Monkey,
what you describe (government directed industries, hyper interventions in the economy, imperialist wars of aggression) all of which BHO endorses, are statist and syndicalist .BHO is constructing a left wing corporatist state. The me-too Republicans are very comfortable with a similar model, but with a different elite pulling the levers. This is hardly a Republican mantra.

Michael:
Common comments among Republicans is that Democrats had control of the Congress for two years - sort of half true. Yes, they did have a majority in both houses for two years until the election of 2010, however lets get a few facts on the table.
1. Dems didn't have a filibuster proof majority until Al Franken was sworn in July 7, 09.
2. Kirk didn't replace Kennedy until Sept. 24th, giving Dems only11 wks before winter recess. Shortly thereafter Brown was elected, and the Republicans began to use the filibuster to block everything of importance. So Dems had filibuster proof senate for a matter of weeks, not years!

OD:
Punting the ball on an economic recovery package due to lack of a filibuster proof Senate? This is very lame excuse for lack of leadership (yet it is commonly heard among Democrats). Lyndon Johnson didn't balk on the Civil Rights Act of 1964 because of his numbers in the Senate. He rounded up Republican votes, which were easier to acquire than racist Southern Democratic votes. Leadership requires crossing the aisle and incorporating something of your opponent's ideas to pass legislation for the common good. BHO is wedded to a rigid ideology that will not allow him to do that on the big issues.
Arthur Dent

No Michael, it's called legislative procedure, and the only way you can get these bills enacted is by getting in a room and pounding out a compromise that will get enough votes to pass. Of course, Republicans don't compromise, so millions of citizens continue to suffer economic hardship. For you to blame President Obama for the recalcitrant behavior of congressional Republicans is a load of dung. The Repubs NEED TO DO THEIR GD JOB AND LEGISLATE! Instead, they whine like babies and refuse to even come to the table. Now that's GREAT politics.
OllieD
11:05 am on Tuesday, September 11, 2012
Michael - Gee, don't know where to start. Quick fact, the useof the filibuster by the Republicans increased greatly in 2010 with no interests in compromise.
Now lets have a reality check on Johnson since you brought it up. First, I don't believe we have had a president in the 20th century with the knowledge of and power within the congress that Johnson had. A accepted fact. In addition, your slam of "racist Southern Democrates" is correct. What you fail to mention is many of these southern Dixiecrats became Republicans shortly after the passage of the Civil Rights Act going to the party where they were welcomed. Also there was not a meeting on the night Johnson was sworn in by the Republicans to do everything within their power not to allow Johnson to have any meaningful legislation as did the leadership of the Republican party on the evening Obama was sworn in. Also the filibuster has been used more in the past two years than any other time in history. Do I believe Obama has been perfect - no, far from it. He has made errors in leadership. However, he has no meaningful assistance from the opposition party. What worries me more is regardless of who gets elected, I expect congress to continue to be a dead end.

Sorry Monk, you'll have to do better than red herrings and the ol' bag of Leftist canards.
Let's take a look at facts. Obama had swaths of me too Republicans which he could have turned, if he were interested in legislating. Obama has never been interested in legislating. His paper thin resume is about ideological crusading, not legislating.
Let's look at Bob Woodward's account, once a fav of Leftists, now that he raises questions about Obama, we'll have to see:
“There’s this divided-man quality to President Obama always. Initially he meets with the congressional leaders, he says you know, ‘We’re going to be accommodating, we’re going to listen, we’re going to talk, we’re going to compromise,” Woodward said.
“But then they — Republicans ask some questions and challenge him a little bit and he says, ‘Look I won. I’m in charge here,’ ” Woodward continued. “And the Republicans feel totally isolated and ostracized. And this was the beginning of a war.”
Obama the ideological crusader at work.

So many half-truths to wade through. Yes, LBJ was an historic legislative leader, and celebrated arm twister, who got things done. Ronald Reagan was not a legislative leader, but used alternative methods to get things done. BHO was a middling community organizer, who was bored by the legislative process. He is rumored to be eloquent and persuasive, but is only able to convince his acolytes that he is magnificent. He fails to reach across the aisle and bring anyone over to his side. Case in point: John Boehner was ready, willing and able to bring votes on a bi-partisan debt extension agreement, that included tax increases (supposedly yearned for by BHO). However, BHO rejected, out of hand, any agreement. In fact, a senior Democratic Congressional aide dressed him down in the Oval Office for his failure to present a Plan B. The Congressional Dems were left high and dry and had to craft their own response. Again leading from behind.

cont.
The Southern Strategy was concocted by Richard Nixon (with the help of Kevin Phillips et al) in 1968. Nixon, as one of the most domestically liberal 20th century Republicans, used foreign policy, military issues, law and order (oh a dog whistle term!!!) and an attack on media and academic elites to draw Southern voters. The segregationist wing of the Democratic party had been completely routed and discredited by this point. Nixon, the author of affirmative action and forced busing was not of this ilk. The Civil Rights Bill of 1964 could not have been passed without the support of Republicans.
I'm surprised to learn that conspiracy theories have survived the John Birch Society, the Lyndon LaRouchites and those who see the Masons as responsible for all ills. Therefore, I don't give much credit to your cry that dark meetings were held to undermine poor Democrats throughout history. Political leaders meet around the clock to assert their interests and undermine their opponents. Leadership involves convincing your opponents, either through persuasion, carrots or sticks, that their interests lie in compromise. BHO has failed mightily in this regard.
