Two Milton Residents Among Seven to Earn Fontbonne Internships

The selective program is in honor of 1977 graduate Julie Connelly who passed away last summer.

Seven Fontbonne Academy students including Milton residents Christina Ferrera and Caitlin Gemma will be interning this summer through a program established to honor alumna Julie Connelly '77 who tragically passed away last summer.

The internship program was established to honor Connelly who was the Citizens Bank Senior Vice President, Director of Community Relations for all of Massachusetts for 25 years, and who dedicated herself to helping women escape poverty through her role as a board member of the Women's Institute for Housing and Economic Development.

Ferrara and Gemma, both incoming seniors, will begin six-week internships at the Brookview House in Dorchester and Casa Esperanza in Roxbury, respectively.

In addition to these two intern host locations, Brockton Family and Community Resources are also hosting Fontbonne Academy interns.

In order to be selected for the internships, students from the class of 2011 had to have at least a 3.0 grade point average, have demonstrated a commitment to social justice and community service, have strong teacher recommendations, and submit an essay on how the internship would enhance their ability to have a positive impact on the world around them.

"Our students work year-round to cultivate compassion and advocacy through their community service and their Senior Social Justice Project, and these internships allow them to delve deeper into their respective interests be it domestic violence, homelessness or substance abuse," said Theology teacher, Cynthia Gadziela in a release from the school.
