Would You Miss Saturday Mail Delivery?

A proposal would end Saturday first-class mail delivery.

The U.S. Postal Service is reportedly announcing on Wednesday that it will stop Saturday first-class mail delivery by Aug. 1, reported CBS News

Mail personnel have delivered mail on Saturdays for 150 years, but the plan is to end regular mail service, while maintaining Saturday delivery for packages and express mail, said CBS News.

The move is the latest attempt by the cash-strapped federal department to save money. It has already cut employees and service, but still reportedly lost $16 billion last year.

What do you think about this idea? Would you miss Saturday mail service?

As long as parcels, express, and window service will be available on Saturday, it should be ok.

Many people depend upon the postal service to deliver medications and other important parcels on time. The postal service is their lifeline, especially in rural areas.

Notice that those TV commercials for the USPS are gone, the ones bragging that well over a billion of those "If it fits it ships" boxes have been sold.

Average price of those assorted boxes: $12.

That's well over 12 billion dollars. How many more have been sold over the Holidays? I guess the USPS can't claim they're broke and selling billions of boxes at the same time.

The one commodity necessary for mail delivery is fuel, and fuel prices have soared. Because I understand rising fuels costs I would have no complaints if the cost of mailing one fist-class letter was 75 or 80 cents. My internet service bill just went up $3 in a month, complaining about it isn't going to change that. I'm willing to pay 30 more cents per letter to ensure that I will always have the option of using snail mail.

Despicable of the Federal Government to allow this to happen.
Makes me sad.

Yes, and the reasons behind this step taken by the post office are ridiculous and politically rooted, if anyone RESEARCHES it. Look out folks - first Saturday - then... before you know it - we will be relying on private companies to mail anything we have - for a huge profit. Right now, you can spend very little on a stamp and be fairly certain (almost 100%) your letter will get to where it's going. Some day - that will be a thing of the past. Do you really want to lose that? I don't.

I disagree with some of these pro USPS comments stating at private companies will come in and hike our deliveryl prices. Companies like FedEx and UPS are just itching for the government to lift its monopoly on the first class letter delivery business including access to federal mailboxes. They know that they could provide this service for the same price, in the same time (or faster) and make a profit! Let's face facts, most European countries have already gone to privatization, and it's not because it doesn't work...
