Milton Yoga Reaches Out
Milton teachers and students extend their practice to benefit children's causes.
Team Milton Yoga is participating in the Yoga Reaches Out Yogathon at Gillette Stadium on May 6. The day-long fundraising event will benefit the Children’s Hospital Boston Division of Developmental Medicine and the Africa Yoga Project. Milton Yoga owner Sean McCarthy talked with columnist Julie Fay about motivation, health and supporting “two great causes.”
Describe the Yoga Reaches Out fundraiser.
It’s open to teams or individuals. Each participant agrees to raise and/or donate $250 (similar to being a charity runner for the Boston Marathon). Team Milton Yoga has seven members right now, but our goal is to get to 50. That would mean $12,500 (raised).
There will be some big yoga names at the event.
A couple of my teachers have worked with Baron Baptiste (the featured presenter). There’s a great lineup of teachers, including Coral Brown, Kevan Gale and David Vendetti. Participants will be there from 9:00 – 5:00, and get eight classes, separated by breaks. Doing yoga from 9-5 would be tough.
What are the benefits of participating?
We’re creating a yoga community here in Milton. It’s team-building; you have a yoga buddy, like a workout buddy. Having a buddy to work with is always more fun. It’s encouraging people to come into yoga and continue to grow with us.
Having an event to work towards keeps everybody motivated. It’s staying fit and healthy, and doing what we love to do, and we have a goal in May of raising money to support two great causes.
How can people get involved?
Visit our website and click on the Yoga Reaches Out icon. You can join Team Milton Yoga or donate right there.
We’re also having Sunday morning community classes, taught by different teachers and teacher trainees. They’re drop-in classes at 8:00 a.m. for $5 each, and all proceeds will go toward our Yogathon goal.
