The MIAA Girls Basketball South Division 2 semi final match between Fontbonne Academy and Scituate High School was played at Massasoit Community College on Wednesday, March 7.
The Fontbonne Ducks' (15-8, No. 13 seed) dream of making it into the MIAA Girls Basketball Division 2 South finals would end with a loss to the Scituate Sailors (23-0, No.1 seed), 50-36 at Massasoit Community College's Field House.
The Sailors are undefeated so far this season and they showed why, by controlling most of the game and sometimes scoring with ease. The Sailors would take the lead from the start and hold onto it until the final buzzer.
Fontbonne's Jen Gemma, (18 points, 12 rebounds), was in a fierce battle under the boards fighting for every rebound with Scituate's trio Shannon Brady (25 points, 9 rebounds), Kelly Martin (12 points, 5 rebounds) and Megan Otto (5 points, 8 rebounds).
For the first half the Ducks stayed with the Sailors and trailed by 5 points, 23-18.
At the start of the second half the Ducks would close the gap to 23-22, but then the Sailors began their drive and when the fourth quarter started they had a comfortable lead, 37-29.
The Sailors would hold that lead until the end winning the game 50-36.
“I’m really proud of the way we played," said Fontbonne's Head Coach Clare Murphy. "I thought we played them really tough. We just didn’t score enough points to give ourselves a shot at the end.”
The other top scorer for the Ducks was Georgia Bourikas with 11 points.
This was the final game of the season for the Fontbonne Ducks while the Scituate Sailors moved on for the finals against Natick at UMass on Saturday, March 10.
Note: Jen Gemma, Rebecca Olivieria and Josehine Wong are Milton residents that attend Fontbonne Academy.
