Candidate Q&A: Gabriel Gomez

Gabriel Gomez is on the Republican ballot in the April 30 special U.S. Senate election.

1. Former Senator Scott Brown spoke often about his independence and not always voting with the Republican leadership. Which one or two issues do you most agree with Republican leadership? Which one or two issues do you most disagree with Republican leadership?   I agree with (thoughts on) debt. We need to address the spending side, first and foremost. Secondly, I agree with dealing with sequestration along with the spending side. I don't believe in any kind of discrimination, and I'm for repealing DOMA. If two people are in love, they should be able to get married. I'm also not in line with Republican leadership on immigration. We need to secure the border, and have a pathway to citizenship that is difficult, but not impossible. 2. Our …

Candidate Q&A: Michael Sullivan

Michael Sullivan is on the Republican ballot in the April 30 special U.S. Senate election.

1. Former Senator Scott Brown spoke often about his independence and not always voting with the Republican leadership. Which one or two issues do you most agree with Republican leadership? Which one or two issues do you most disagree with Republican leadership?  I’m not sure because I don’t have any particular issue before me. But I will certainly take an independent review of any issue that comes before me as a United States Senator. The test is going to be is it in the best interests of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the best interests of our country? And ultimately I’ll make a decision based on if its in the best interests of our country and the people of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Regardless of where the idea comes from…

I like the fact that Mike Sullivan has core convictions but also wants to study the issues and get all the facts as opposed to the legislators who passed Obamacare without even reading it. Now we are seeing the gory details.   more ›

Candidate Q&A: Stephen Lynch

Congressman Stephen Lynch is on the Democratic ballot in the April 30 special U.S. Senate election.

1. Both you and your opponent voted with your party more than 90% of the time. What separates you from your opponent in the primary? How can Mass voters be assured that either of you won't simply vote lockstep with Majority Leader Reid? I don’t think anybody thinks that Ed Markey and I are the same. Anybody that knows us. Ed Markey is who he is and I am who I am. The perspectives that we bring are very distinct. Number one, in the Republican House, Republicans continue to lob over bad ideas on a regular basis. They continue to put up measures that are damaging to a significant part of the people of the United States. They are sending us in the wrong direction. The fact that on those votes Ed Markey and I both recognize bad ideas and we …

I will have a problem supporting Stephen Lynch because of his votes, that to me, have been in line with the Conservative obstructionist republican vote for the wealthy and against the people. The most important vote was his vote against the Affordable Health Care Act(Obamacare). This was the taxpayers money going to benefit the taxpayers. Unlike the taxpayers money going to the bankers and Wall …   more ›

Hybrids and Voters in Milton

Milton voted for Elizabeth Warren and owns more hybrid cars than the state average.

Milton is green and blue: That’s what we found when we compared data from the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles to the vote in the 2012 U.S. Senate race. milton You can see the results in the map above: Large circles suggest towns with more hybrid ownership per capita, and the red/blue color suggests which way those towns voted last year. In Milton, 23.5 of every 1,000 vehicles is a hybrid, compared to the state average of 18. Patch’s research suggests the state has a good number of what might be called “green Republican” communities. More than 40 percent of the communities where Republican Scott Brown carried the vote have an above average numbers of hybrids. The data is a nice rebuttal to the national trends of hybrid/GOP …

Gloves Are Off in U.S. Senate Race

A look back at what happened over the past week in the U.S. Senate race.

It was a very busy week in the race for U.S. Senate. Things started to get heated as the candidates continue to race toward the April 30 primaries. We saw candidates lashing out at party backing, another facing an ethics complaint, new poll numbers, and more. Let’s start with the Democrats this week. Democratic candidates Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) and Edward Markey (D-Malden) will face off in a second debate Monday night in Lowell. If the news of the past week is any indication, it should make for an interesting back and forth between the candidates. Lynch took aim at his party leaders last week for supporting Markey. Lynch told the Boston Herald that the Democratic leaders haven’t been fair and told them that he thinks they’ve done …

Milton Town Clerk Prepares for Rare Dual Election

The Milton town election and the special senate election primary will both be held on Tuesday, April 30.

Milton voters will have two reasons to go to the polls on Tuesday, April 30 with the town election and special senate primary falling on the same day. "We have two separate elections going on," said Town Clerk Susan Galvin. That means two check-in tables and two ballots. Voters will be able to place both ballots in Milton's AccuVote machines, making the task of counting the votes a more streamlined process. Galvin plans to staff additional election volunteers to account for the extra ballot. She has some names for new poll workers and a sizable pool since the presidential election was so recent. Anyone interested in volunteering at the polls can call the Town Clerk's office at 617-898-4859. Galvin said the primary date just happened to …

Democrats, Republicans Square Off in First Debate

A look back at what happened over the past week in the U.S. Senate race.

It was a big week in the race for U.S. Senate, with both Republican and Democratic candidates facing off for the first time in a debate Wednesday night. Candidates running in the April primary faced each other in two 30-minute debates in an event sponsored by the Boston Media Consortium and held at the WCVB-TV, Channel 5 studios in Needham. Congressmen Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) and Edward Markey (D-Malden) went several rounds on the topic of health care reform in the first debate between the two Democrats. The two also sparred over bank bailouts.   Write-in Democratic candidate Brett Rhyne was not at the debate. Republicans also faced each other for the first time in their own debate immediately following Lynch and Markey. Candidates …

State House News Service Weekly Roundup: Hizzoner's Decision

Recap and analysis of the week in state government.

He's been omnipresent for 20 years from Roslindale to East Boston. His endorsement is coveted by city council hopefuls and U.S. senators alike. He occasionally mutilates the English language, mangles the names of sports stars, and commands loyalty unlike any public figure in Boston. He was mayor-for-life. Now he'll be mayor for only another nine months. This week, as House Speaker Robert DeLeo continued to wait for the rescue helicopter to take him away from Gov. Deval Patrick's "fantasy land" of higher taxes and trains, the Governor's Council was up to its old tricks and the race for U.S. Senate kicked into a higher gear. But little could compete with Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and "The Decision" that held foes and allies alike breathless…

Republican Senate Hopefuls Call for Repeal of DOMA in Debate

GOP and Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate debated Wednesday night at the Channel 5 studios in Needham.

The Republican candidates for U.S. Senate leaned on their diverse backgrounds to explain positions on issues ranging from the economy and debt reduction to gay marriage Wednesday night. Gabriel Gomez, a former Navy SEAL and businessman from Cohasset, said that hearing from a variety of perspectives served him well in the military and that he would bring those lessons to bear working with fellow Republicans and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. State Rep. Dan Winslow (R-Norfolk), saying "Obamacare is bad for Massachusetts" and simply layers federal bureacracy on top of the state's system, highlighted an upcoming legislative proposal on Beacon Hill to reduce health care costs. Former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan talked about making …
