USTA AWARDS $7,500 MULTICULTURAL EXCELLENCE PROGRAM GRANT TO SPORTSMEN'S TENNIS & ENRICHMENT CENTER OF DORCHESTER

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., April 3, 2014 – The USTA today announced that it has awarded a $7,500 Multicultural Excellence Program Grant to the Sportsmen’s Tennis & Enrichment Center (STEC) of Dorchester, Mass. The funds are designed to support competitive junior development programs that are training youngsters aspiring to achieve national and/or international rankings.

“The Sportsmen’s Tennis & Enrichment Center is truly deserving of this year’s Multicultural Excellence Program Grant,” said D.A. Abrams, Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, USTA. “We are glad to have a program like this that not only stays mission-focused on developing talented players, but also plays a major role in positively impacting their surrounding communities. With tennis at the helm, they are certain to remain thriving with successful impacts and outcomes.”

For the second consecutive year, the Multicultural Excellence Grant will help STEC serve more than 5,000 youth by supporting programs including: academic out-of-school classes for economically disadvantaged youth, “STEC For Free” programs for youth with sedentary lifestyles and college readiness courses, in addition to its strong tennis curriculum.

STEC primarily serves Boston’s Blue Hill Corridor. As part of the USTA’s NJTL network, STEC provides academic, wellness and social development programs coupled with recreational and competitive tennis instruction for youth and adults. The African-American run organization strives to increase the number of diverse players taking the tennis court each year.

STEC is one of eight recipients of the 2014 Multicultural Excellence Program Grant. Other recipients include: Marty Hennessy Junior Tennis Foundation, Peterson School of Tennis, South Atlanta Community Tennis Association, T Bar M Tennis Academy, Dallas Tennis Association, RAMP Tennis Academy and Northwest High Performance Tennis.
