Milton’s Senior Citizens Stay Fit

Residents benefit by exercising at the Milton Council on Aging.

Senior citizens in Milton are keeping fit by taking part in the Chair Exercise Program offered by the Council on Aging.

The free activity is offered every Tuesday at the COA’s senior center, located at 10 Walnut St.

The program is run by Nancy Stuart, who uses her training as a registered nurse and information from the National Institutes of Health to lead the seniors through their sessions.

The chair exercise includes a mix of stretching, balance, and weight resistance. Stuart said the program helps seniors keep active and develop friendships with their peers, adding that even those who have recovered from serious injuries such as fractures and torn rotator cuffs are able to participate.

Stuart noted that the program only had about six people when it began in 2006 but is now at capacity with 30 participants. There is a waiting list for those who want to join.

COA Director Mary Ann Sullivan said Stuart is the perfect leader for the Chair Exercise Program.

“She does a fabulous job,” said Sullivan, who added that the program is one of the COA’s most popular among men. “It draws a lot of new people in. They all have a lot of fun. They all leave with smiles on their faces.”

Indeed, seniors participating in yesterday’s program said they were enjoying themselves.

“It’s very good,” said a woman who would only identify herself as Catherine. “It gives me some exercise. I feel it’s good for me.”

Another senior, Edna Roman, agreed.

“It’s a wonderful program,” said Roman. “I’ve been coming for several years. It helps keep you limber.”
