Bayside Sendik's Sold: Expansion, Remodeling Planned

Applications have been submitted and the 'Red Bag' Balistreri's will seek village approval next week.

Sendik's Bayside is changing ownership to the Balistreri family of the "Red Bag" Sendik's, amid promises of renovations, expansion and of course the famous red bag.

"This is a great opportunity for us to serve the surrounding communities by designing a store with a focus on fast, fresh and healthy offerings," Ted Balistreri said in a press release. "We'll be offering a quick and easy way to fill your tank while carrying on the rich tradition we have established of providing the best shopping experience, period."

Ted Balistreri announced Thursday that his branch of the Sendik's markets will partner with Devo Properties of Mequon to purchase the entire shopping corridor from Sendik's gas pumps east to Mohawk Road. This purchase includes the building at 326 W. Brown Deer Road, which houses Community Bark Dog Wash and Coffee Bar, Kurth Chiropractic and Great Lakes Foot and Ankle Center. They will also purchase the home at the corner of Mohawk and Brown Deer roads, which is zoned commercial.

"Brown Deer Road and Port Washington Road is the most visible and highly trafficked intersection in the village," Bayside Village Manager Andy Pederson said. "We are pleased that the Sendik's operation, albeit different ownership, will continue to operate and serve the area, continuing to be a foundation in the Bayside community."

Internal upgrades and enhancements to the existing Sendik's building could begin as early as January 2013, with work on the new 3,500-square-foot expansion kicking off around the same time, pending village approval. With both buildings completed, Sendik's will operate 15,000 square feet at the corner of Brown Deer and Port Washington Roads. Those other business spaces in the center will remain as individual spaces.

The remodel application to the village includes a request for enhanced signage at the Community Bark building. The Mobil gas station will remain open during construction and continue to be operated by Sendik's, the release said.

"We look forward to the facility and aesthetic enhancements as well as the enthusiasm that the Balistreri Family, the 'red bag' operation, has for serving the Bayside community for the years to come," Pederson said.

Keep the red bags intact, as-is. Nothing keeps the olfactory offending odors of litter box pickings at bay until garbage pickup day as effectively.

No guarantees of reemployment. Told to apply online like any other prospective job seeker. A few maybe offered jobs at Downer store, but not many. Very sad for long term loyal employees, esp. Deli ladies Jan and Regina. Even if hired back, would be off for 3-4 months till new store opens. No severance offered.

Sendik's does offer a 5c rebate for every bag you bring in and use. I worked there from 04-06.
