After a five-year period as a ski instructor, yoga teacher and certified personal trainer in Colorado, Wyoming, and Texas, Milton native Sean McCarthy has brought his love of yoga back home.
McCarthy opened his Milton Yoga studio at 777 Randolph Ave on May 2 and has seen a great response in the community.
“It’s been better than expected, it’s been a great reception,” McCarthy said of the business’s first few months. “I’ve been averaging about a new student a day, which is fantastic.”
McCarthy offers classes Monday through Saturday in both the Hatha and Vinyasa styles of yoga. Students have the option of starting their day with an early morning class or closing out their day with an evening session. They can also choose from one of three classes offered on Saturdays ranging from 8 to 11 a.m.
Whether a student is a seasoned yogi or a newcomer to the practice, he or she is welcome to join a class and discover the physical and spiritual benefits of yoga: strength and flexibility, cardiovascular health, weight management and emotional well-being.
McCarthy adds that “Not only has yoga made me strong and fit but it has brought me balance and peace.:
Two of McCarthy’s most popular yoga classes are the Beginners Hatha at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays and the Yoga Boot Camp at 11 a.m. on Saturdays. He offers a Beginners Flow class in addition to Beginner Hatha, concentrating on helping ease new students into yoga in a helpful, calming environment. Milton Yoga’s beginner classes are especially welcoming because, unlike a traditional yoga environment where students silently listen to their instructor, new students can speak out with any questions they may have. As McCarthy explains, “if you have a question about a posture we stop, we answer that question, and it sort of lightens the air a little bit, keeps everybody in the room participating.”
A main goal of Milton Yoga is not to achieve the perfect yoga pose or perform each movement flawlessly, but for experienced students and beginners alike to maintain or catch “the yoga bug.”
Everybody was a beginner at one point, and creating an atmosphere of trust, fun, and relaxation helps every student—and the instructor—grow in his or her own practice.
An added incentive for the yoga-prone to try a class or two is the fantastic 10-days-for-$10 deal—that is, pay $10 to attend ten consecutive days of classes at Milton Yoga. The deal is perfect for the curious client because “you can try out all the classes you want, you can come to every class every day if you want. It kind of gives you a little taste for all of them.”
McCarthy will also be offering a Kids’ Yoga Camp, which runs for the last week in July and the first four weeks in August. The camp will focus on introducing kids to yoga in a stress-free, fun environment and providing benefits beyond strength and flexibility.
Yoga helps kids “with their daily lives, with ADHD, with becoming more aware of their surroundings, and with making a mind-body connection,” said McCarthy.
Giving back to the Milton community seems to run in the family—McCarthy’s mother Nancy McCarthy founded the first Carriage House School in Milton in 1978 because, he remembers, “she saw there was a need for a preschool in the community.”
Fast-forward thirty years, and McCarthy is filling another community need with his yoga studio. He hopes to offer prenatal yoga classes and regularly scheduled kids yoga classes in the future in addition to the usual Milton Yoga schedule. McCarthy encouragingly sums up his message to prospective students with a simple statement: “Come give us a try and catch the yoga bug.”
