Let There Be Art

More than 180 art supporters attended ArtSpaceMilton’s “Let there be Art” fundraiser on June 17 at . With a silent auction featuring sports tickets, local and not-so-local getaways, spa and wellness services, and fine art and photography, as well as iPad raffle (won by Suzanne Lombardi) the event raised more than $10,000 for the new art center in town. 

Next steps for ArtSpace are, according to founder Janet Gilmore, “Starting renovations over the summer and gearing up for a fall opening.” 

Temple Shalom installs New Officers

installed new officers and directors at its Annual Congregational Meeting, held June 12 at the Temple’s new temporary spiritual home in the Great Hall of . Longtime Milton resident and Temple Shalom member Ronit Voigt was installed as President. Other officers are: Vice Presidents Marilyn Monderer, Paul Cooperstein, Pamela Shrago, and Karen Friedman Hanna; Treasurer Alan Rosenstein and Secretary Lawrence Rose. Installed as members of the Board of Directors were Dr. Shelley Charnoff, Bill Hanna, Sidney Quint, Robert Rosofsky, Laura Brody Young and Jennifer Zaslow. 

Spiritual leader Rabbi Alfred Benjamin said, “Seeing Ronit take the helm as President of Temple Shalom fills me with a profound sense of hope, not only because of who she is, but also because of her personal history as someone who, along with her parents, fled Germany on the eve of WWII and the coming Holocaust.  Ronit’s devotion to the Jewish and wider Milton community reflects an attitude where life is seen as an opportunity to be a blessing to those around us.  In Hebrew the name Ronit means ‘singing’ or ‘joyful sounds.’ Who could ask for more of a Temple President?” 

Swimmercise Under way at Cunningham Pool

The Cunningham Pool opened for the season on June 20, to the delight of many children and parents . In case you ever wondered what goes on at the pool during its long lunch break – there is a “Swimmercise” low-impact water aerobics class twice a week for seniors from noon to 1:00 p.m. Seniors must purchase a pool tag for $5 and classes are $4 each. Mulqueen Brings “Confidence” to Nursing Home

Performing artist and Milton resident Jennie Mulqueen presented her cabaret-style act “I Have Confidence:  A Tribute to Julie Andrews” to an enthusiastic crowd at Weymouth’s Pope Nursing Home on June 20. Mulqueen was accompanied by pianist John Kramer.    

A veteran of the art of cabaret, “I Have Confidence” is the latest in a variety of “one woman show” performances Mulqueen has created.  The one-act performance transports the audience through Dame Julie’s life and career, including songs from My Fair Lady, Camelot, Cinderella, Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music.
