Today is Monday, October 8. Here are five things you need to know.

2. Happy Columbus Day: To those who have off work (mostly bank or federal employees) or school, enjoy the sunny skies and fall temperatures. We hope you have a wonderful, short week.

Columbus Day history: “Franklin Roosevelt created the first federal observance of Columbus Day in 1937; Richard Nixon established the modern holiday by presidential proclamation in 1972,” according to Time.com. The holiday recognizes the accomplishments of Christopher Columbus, who sailed to what is now the Bahamas on October 12, 1492.
