Columbus Day history: “Franklin Roosevelt created the first federal observance of Columbus Day in 1937; Richard Nixon established the modern holiday by presidential proclamation in 1972,” according to Time.com. The holiday recognizes the accomplishments of Christopher Columbus, who sailed to what is now the Bahamas on October 12, 1492.

4. Trash pick-up: Trash collection will be delayed one day due to the holiday. Monday collection will be tomorrow, moving the pick-up back one day.
