Make Way for Glover Ducklings

A mother mallard, closely followed by 11 newly-hatched ducklings, found themselves marching through the hallways of on Tuesday. The ducklings hatched sometime during Monday night or early Tuesday morning, but they patiently waited until MCAS testing ended around noontime before following their mother out of the school’s enclosed courtyard to nearby . 

Students formed a human “hallway” outside the school to help safely guide the ducks to water. In order to avoid startling the mother and babies, Glover students were asked to keep quiet, so barely a noise was heard during the procession. 

The mother mallard had been tending the eggs in her nest, within the Glover School’s enclosed courtyard. For the past several years, there have been ducklings born on the Glover School property. 

St. Agatha’s Teacher an “Unsung Heroine”

 grade 7 teacher Jean Mara was nominated to the Annual Unsung Heroines of Massachusetts. Mara was one of 100 Unsung Heroines honored in a ceremony at the State House on May 18 for using “their time, talent, spirit and enthusiasm to enrich the lives of others.”  

Milton Academy Honors Student Writers

conferred the Laurence S. Persky Memorial Awards on student writers, artists and photographers on May 24. The annual awards are given for the best work appearing in Milton Academy student publications and honor excellence in creative writing, journalism, art, photography and production.

The Persky Awards were established to honor the memory of a Milton student writer who passed away just prior to his senior year over 30 years ago. The Perskys attended this year’s event, and Eleanor Persky spoke briefly about what the evening means for her and her husband. She gave special thanks to faculty member Jim Connolly who handles all aspects of the awards. Head of School Todd Bland did the honor of calling up the students individually and handing them their awards. 

A feature unique to this award is that all the judges are professional writers and artists. This year’s judges were Dan Wasserman and Christine Chinlund from the Boston Globe, writer Don Johnson, and Gregory Mone, a novelist and science writer. For a list of student award recipients, click here. 

Fontbonne to Host Transfer Information Night

will host its first Transfer Information Night on Thursday, June 2 at 7:00 p.m.  Called “Find Your Compass,” the night aims to help young women seeking a new direction in their high school careers. Cormack Sisters to Perform at Derby Summer Arts

Milton residents Monika and Lilja Cormack will take part in two musical theatre productions at the Summer Arts Program at Hingham's Derby Academy  in July. Thirteen-year-old Monika will perform in Gershwin’s “Crazy for You,” and her ten-year-old sister will take part in “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” For more information about Derby Summer Arts and the performances, visit http://www.derbysummerarts.org/. 

Special Education Parents Advisory Council Seeks Board Members

The Milton Special Education PAC is searching for a chairperson, a secretary and a treasurer for the 2011-12 school year. All parents whose children receive special education services through the Milton Public Schools are eligible to serve on the PAC board. 

Currently, the PAC vice-chairperson is Jerry Vitti. Members-at-Large are Nicque Bradshaw, Chris Lenane, Kelly Martin, Gay Plungas, Chris Russell, Vinita Russell and Cathy Tobin.
