Milton No. 79 in List of Top 100 Massachusetts Communities

The Top 50 in Go Local Worcester's list are coming soon.

Milton is the 79th best community in Massachusetts on the strength of its proximity to Boston and its "rich historical heritage, tree-lined streets, and acres of protected open space," according to a list compiled by GoLocalWorcester.com.

The website has released the top 50 so far in its "Massachusetts’ Best Communities 2013" list. Milton comes in just ahead of Topsfield and just behind Sterling.

Of the state's 351 cities and towns, Milton ranked 287 in terms of affordability, according to GoLocalWorcester.com. It ranked 43rd for education, 72nd for economic condition, 102nd for safety and tied for 147th for arts and culture.

"Milton is unique in that it has the most privately and publicly conserved land within 20 miles of Boston, giving the town a bucolic atmosphere in close proximity to the cultural and business opportunities in the Greater Boston area," the website writes.

Neighbor Quincy ranks 57th on the list. The top 10 communities will be published by Thursday.
