Standish Village Program Director Wins Award from Statewide Assisted Living Association

Brook Patterson, the Program Director at Standish Village in Lower Mills, was recently honored by the Massachusetts Assisted Living Association.

Brooke Patterson, Program Director of the Compass Memory Support Neighborhood at Standish Village, 1190 Adams Street, is the proud recipient of the prestigious “Employee Leadership Award” from the Massachusetts Assisted Living Association (MassALFA).

Only one staff member in over 200 assisted living communities in the state wins this yearly award.

Award recipients were recently announced at the MassALFA Annual Awards Dinner. Over 500 residents, volunteers, and staff members from assisted living residences across the state joined in the celebration. Billy Costa, Kiss 108 and NECN's TV Diner, emceed the evening.

Seth Dudley, Executive Director of Standish Village said, “Brooke richly deserves this award. She is a consummate professional, providing innovative care and constant concern for the well-being of individuals with memory loss in our care. She is also a leader in the greater Alzheimer’s care community. She is actively involved with the Alzheimer’s Association as a Helplinevolunteer and holds a leadership role in the Alliance of Alzheimer’s Care Directors.”

Ms. Patterson’s involvement in the development of an adult learning program for residents with cognitive impairment led to her award nomination. This program, in place at Standish Village and its sister community in South Boston, Compass on the Bay, is based on research that cognitive stimulation may slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and recognizing that individuals with memory loss still have the desire and ability to enjoy learning.

Immersion in the weekly course topic through photography, the arts, music, cuisine and related objects and artifacts enable residents to “reconnect” with their own unique history and the current world around them.

Brooke and her colleagues at Senior Living Residences, the parent company of Standish Village, developed 52 courses, one for each week of the year. Ms. Patterson spearheaded the development of the music portion of the program.

Mr. Dudley said, “Brooke makes a daily difference in the lives of the residents she cares for by listening to and constantly observing their needs. An excellent advocate for her residents healthcare and overall well-being, she also knows what they need to continue to feel accomplished and purposeful while living with Alzheimer’s disease, vital to their quality of life.”
