Cause of Curry College Maintenance Barn Fire Unknown

The Milton Fire Department responded to Curry College on January 7 for a fire in the lower level of a maintenance building.

A small fire started in the Curry College maintenance building Tuesday afternoon. The fire was quickly knocked down, but a cause has not been determined.

At 1:20 p.m., a firebox was struck in the Curry College maintenance barn. Milton Engine 4, which is kept at the nearby Blue Hill Avenue Station, and Milton Engine 1 from the Headquarters Station on Canton Avenue, responded to the fire.

“Engine 4 was the first to respond and they knocked [the fire] down right away,” said Milton Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Mahoney.

The fire, which started on the lower level of the large, white building, spread up a wooden column and caused damage to some nearby equipment and paint.

“We had an investigator come in and he couldn’t tell what started it,” said Mahoney.

An electrical panel on the damaged post was shorted out, but Mahoney said the box was secondary so power was not lost to the rest of the building.
