State Trooper Responding to Medical Call Shoots and Kills Man

The state police trooper shot the New Bedford area man after responding to a call he was driving erratically.

A 41-year-old man from the New Bedford area was shot and killed by a Massachusetts State Police trooper Friday morning after they got into a "violent confrontation" on Route 28 heading into Milton.

Officials declined to identify the shooting victim, who they said died at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital – Milton shortly before 9 a.m. State Police Colonel Timothy Alben also declined to identify the trooper, a 25-year veteran of the force.

The trooper responded from the Milton barracks to a call made shortly before 8 a.m. to Milton police from another motorist. The woman said that the victim was driving erratically and based on her observations he may have been experiencing a medical emergency, Alben said.

Upon arrival, the trooper was "confronted by a violent confrontation by the operator," Alben said. He refused to say what kind of confrontation it was or if the driver had a weapon, saying that the investigation is ongoing. Alben also declined to say how many shots were fired.

Route 28 from the Route 93 exit to Chickatawbut Road was closed after the shooting Friday morning and will remain closed until the investigation of the scene is complete. That may take into the early afternoon, Alben said.
