DA Morrissey to Return to Work Monday, Faces Accident Hearing Next Month

Following an accident in Milton last week in which he blacked out and crossed the center line, colliding with two other vehicles, Norfolk Country District Attorney Michael Morrissey will return to work this Monday.

He took time away from his job after the accident on the advice of his doctor, but said in a statement Tuesday that he received the go-ahead to resume his duties "with some restrictions" on July 29. Morrissey did not expand on what those restrictions would be.

Morrissey had just left his Canton office and was traveling to his home in Quincy around 5:50 p.m. on July 16 when his vehicle collided with two other vehicles in the westbound lane off Centre Street. A fourth vehicle swerved to avoid the accident, driving off the roadway.

In a statement last week, Morrissey said that he lost consciousness because of fatigue, dehydration and extreme temperatures just before the crash.

Morrissey was issued a citation by the Milton Police and a hearing will be held Aug. 19 to determine if he is criminally liable.

The hearing will be held in front of a magistrate at Quincy District Court, Morrissey said in his statement Tuesday. He will be represented by his former law partner Tony Campo.

"Medical records and other pertinent documentation will be presented to the clerk magistrate at that time," Morrissey said.

After the accident, Milton Deputy Police Chief John King said that alcohol, cell phone use or other distractions were no the cause of the accident.
