Governor Patrick on Obama's Support of Same-Sex Marriage

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick discusses President Barack Obama's stance on same-sex marriage.

On Wednesday, President Barack Obama officially announced he believes same sex couples should have the legal right to marry in the United States.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick released the following statement after the President’s announcement.

“President Obama has once again affirmed that we are a country that stands for the basic values of equality and opportunity. Since 2004, same-sex couples in Massachusetts have had the security of knowing that their families have the same rights and protections as every other family, including health care benefits and hospital visitation rights. The President's words today give same-sex couples across the country still awaiting those rights a powerful reason to feel hopeful."

What do you think of President Obama's official public stance on same-sex marriage? Remember that same-sex marriage became legal in Massachusetts in 2004 - how has your life changed since then?

I won't pretend that I understand the politics surrounding the President's disclosure but I fully support his position. I see this as a civil rights issue; something the federal government should have taken by the horns long before now. Without question it's a political maneuver by Obama's team but that alone doesn't make it less monumental.
