Milton Appoints Members to Regional Fair Housing Committee

The Board of Selectmen appointed four members of the current Milton Fair Housing Committee to a regional body that helps direct federal resources.

Planning Director Bill Clark nominated himself, as the Fair Housing Officer, Planning Board member Alexander Whiteside, selectmen designee  Joseph Duffy and Thomas Callahan to the South Shore HOME Consortium.

The consortium consists of member communities Milton, Quincy, Braintree, Weymouth and Holbrook. It will allow the Milton committee to focus on affordable housing, as it has been, and the regional body to focus on educating Realtors on fair housing, Clark said.

"It would be much easier to do it on a regional basis," Clark told the selectmen last week.

According to a description on the City of Quincy website, the consortium "provides formula grants to States and localities that communities use-often in partnership with local nonprofit groups-to fund a wide range of activities that build, buy, and/or rehabilitate affordable housing for rent or homeownership or provide direct rental assistance to low-income people."

HOME originally was set up to take five members from each community, but Clark said he believes 15 members should be the maximum for efficiency. Even so, he is working on a fifth nominee from Milton, and also on filling vacancies on the local committee.
