Milton Appoints Members to Regional Fair Housing Committee

The Board of Selectmen appointed four members of Milton's Fair Housing Committee to a regional body that focuses on steering resources available through the federal fair housing law.

Planning Director William Clark nominated himself, as the town's Fair Housing Officer, along with Joseph Duffy, the fair housing designee of the selectmen, Planning Board member Alexander Whiteside and Thomas Callahan to the South Shore HOME Consortium.

The consortium consists of Quincy, Weymouth, Braintree, Holbrook and Milton.

According to a description on the City of Quincy website, "HOME provides formula grants to States and localities that communities use-often in partnership with local nonprofit groups-to fund a wide range of activities that build, buy, and/or rehabilitate affordable housing for rent or homeownership or provide direct rental assistance to low-income people."

Clark said the town's committee focuses primarily on affordable housing, and that the regional group will be able to take the lead on teaching fair housing practices to Realtors throughout the year.

"It would be much easier to do it on a regional basis," Clark said.

The original idea was to have each of the five towns that are part of the consortium contribute five members – Clark said he is working on a fifth from Milton – but ideally the regional group would have 15 members, Clark said.

The town's committee will continue to operate as well. It has three empty slots, Clark said.
