This summer, students have a chance to win a bike just by reading.
For the 15th year, Milton readers have a chance to win a bike by just reading a book through the Dependable Cleaners Read to Ride Program. Students, ages six to 15, are eligible to start reading this week through August 9. Weekly prizes will be given out June 3 through August 12, with the exception of the Fourth of July. Entry forms are available at Dependable Cleaners, Farina’s Bicycle Center, Country Ski and Sport, and atdependablecleaners.com/read-ride. Participants can submit one entry form per book they read to any Dependable Cleaners location or with home delivery drivers.

Newsweek has ranked the high schools nationally, but the criteria editors used leaves Milton High School off of their list. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see the details about the ranking, and every other ranked high school by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above. The survey scores were then weighted and calculated using several criteria including on-time graduation and college acceptance rates. In addition, instead of averaging the number of courses offered, this year Newsweek considered the percentage of students enrolled in AP, IB or Advance International Certificate courses. Two Fontbonne Academy students organized a week of fundraising and activities in response to the Boston Marathon bombing.
A Milton student and a classmate from Quincy created “One with the One Fund” this week at Fontbonne Academy to support the One Fund Boston for victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. Milton junior Rebecca Olivieri and freshwoman Claire Lyons organized the week that included collecting donations and other activities. The week included morning prayers, a Boston t-shirt day and the making of ribbon pins. The Fontbonne community was encouraged to walk a lap around the school as part of a “Marathon Challenge," a collective effort to walk 26.2 miles, the length of a marathon. A group of Fontbonne Academy students led an anti-bullying program for sixth graders at St. Agatha's School as par of "Ducks in Service Day."
About 100 Fontbonne Academy students, the junior class and the senior members of the National Honor Society, set out into the community on Wednesday, April 24, for a day of service. The "Ducks in Service Day" sent groups of students to nursing homes, food pantries and schools, including St. Agatha's School in Milton. Seniors Callie Cabral, Cindy Truong, Christine Carroll and Emily Devane were joined by seven Fontbonne juniors for an interactive anti-bullying program for sixth graders. The high school students interacted with three individual classes for an hour each on Wednesday morning. Carroll said one of the reasons that students chose Fontbonne Academy for high school is the low incidence of bullying, so she felt attached to this …

Dr. Elaine McNeil-Girmai to return to her hometown as principal of Tucker Elementary School.
Dr. Elaine McNeil-Girmai was appointed recently as the new prinicpal of Tucker Elementary School. Schools superintendent Mary Gormley announced the appointment on her blog for the Milton School Department. "I am very excited to return to Milton," wrote McNeil-Girmai in an email to Patch. "I received a wonderful education through the Milton school system that I believe set me up for success in college and beyond. "I have fond memories of my time at Tucker and I hope to create similar memories for the students while ensuring they receive a strong academic start to their education."
