We have all been taught that the Puritans arrived in the New World to escape religious persecution in the old one. Specifically, English Puritans sought to free themselves from the official Church of England, established by Tudor King Henry VIII in the mid-16th Century and firmly embedded in the governance of Britain. Ironically, it did not take too long for the Puritans here to engage in some religious intolerance of their own, new churches and new towns founded throughout New England as the result of disagreements on how the Puritan dream of the City on the Hill should be realized. The fourth day of Annual Town Meeting is Monday, May 14.
The fourth, and likely final, night of Milton’s Annual Town Meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 14. The meeting, which will be held in the Milton High School auditorium, will begin at 7:30 p.m. After a late Day Three last Thursday, Town Meeting will vote on the final six Warrant Articles tonight. Town Meeting will begin with Article 36, which the Warrant Committee recommends the town appropriate $25,000 for the purposes of updating the Town’s Master Plan. Article 37 will ask Town Meeting to amend Milton’s Flood Plain District Regulations in the Zoning Bylaws. Milton Town Meeting approved 16 articles on Thursday, May 10. The third day of Annual Town Meeting was held at Milton High School. The next session will be held at Milton High at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 14. Below are the recommendations of the Warrant Committee and an explanation of how Town Meeting voted. Milton Town Meeting approved 13 articles on Tuesday, May 8. The second day of Annual Town Meeting was held at Milton High School. On an historic opening night of Town Meeting, Milton's longest-serving Town Meeting member, M. Joseph Manning, was recognized.
The name M. Joseph Manning is well-known to many across the Commonwealth and specifically right here in Milton. With a long political career, esteemed service to the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II and even a park in his name in East Milton Square, Joe Manning is a true Milton icon. On the opening night of Town Meeting, May 7, 2012, exactly 350 years to the day of Milton’s first Town Meeting, Manning was honored. Town Meeting accepted six articles on Monday, May 7, during the opening session of Annual Town Meeting.
At the first night of Milton Annual Town Meeting at First Parish Church six articles were passed. The first five articles of the 2012 Warrant were approved with out discussion. Article 6, which pertains to funding for collective bargaining was continued to Tuesday night because Moderator Brian Walsh anticipated a lengthy discussion and the need for a PowerPoint presentation, a technology option not available at the church. Article 7, which the Warrant Committee recommended to appropriate the sum of $1,855,060 to fund capital improvements in town, spurred the longest conversation on Monday and was ultimately accepted with two friendly amendments. The opening night of Town Meeting on Monday will travel back in time with several items relating to the town's 350th anniversary.
Annual Town Meeting is an event that marks the month of May every year in Milton. The opening session of the 2012 meeting will flash back to the town’s beginnings, 350 years ago. The first connection to the past at the Monday, May 7, meeting will be the location. The meeting will be held in the town’s fourth meeting house, First Parish Church.
