TELL US: Does 'Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer' Condone Bullying?

Does the lovable children's holiday classic send the wrong message? Tell us your thoughts.

In October, Patch asked readers how they felt about one parent's view that "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" condoned bullying. Specifically, blogger DadCamp wrote that the show sends the wrong message to children because of its "continuous teasing and bullying" It's not the first time a parent has spoken out against a classic children's program with such a claim. Last December, news spread that author and special ed professor George Giuliani said that "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" was also a program laden with the theme of bullying, considering how much Rudolph was an outsider due to his glowing red nose. Giuliani, as such, wrote a book titled "No More Bullies at the North Pole," which re-tells the story of Rudolph. What do you …

It's A Wonderful Life

'Look, Daddy. Teacher says, every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings,' ZuZu Bailey.

This is one of the family’s favorite Christmas traditions. After we decorate the tree we all snuggle in with fancy hot chocolate and, if they’ve been exceptionally well-behaved that year, they’ll get homemade snickerdoodles. They didn’t get the snickerdoodles last year. Fingers-crossed that this year when I tally it all up, the good will outweigh the not-so-good. I missed the snickerdoodles last year. This is one of our “newer” traditions. We’ve only been watching for the last three or four years. Dylan started it and he really loves the movie. Honestly, I don’t really remember seeing it in its entirety before I started watching it with Pat and the kids. I’m more of a Grinch girl. Oh, and Frosty. I do have to admit that “It’s a Wonderful …

Elf on the Shelf: Friend or Foe?

Columnist Vanessa McManus examines the effectiveness of a growing holiday tradition in families with young children: Elf on the Shelf.

Meet Vinny the elf. He’s from the North End of the North Pole and has been visiting us since Thanksgiving. This is his first year staying with us and I must say, he has not been as popular as I had imagined. You see, Vinny can be a bit of a snitch tattling to Santa each night when the children have been naughty. He also reports to Santa on good behavior, but it seems the magic of the holiday season has been bringing out more “naughty” than “nice” behavior in my kids. I’m assuming most parents with younger children are familiar with The Elf on the Shelf concept. But if you are not, then know this: each night you are responsible for placing the elf in a new location so that in the morning, the children can rush to search for him in a new …

Milton Musings

Christmas Countdown

I know it's early, but I'm already behind.

It’s two days after Thanksgiving. Some of you, no doubt, are just getting to bed after 24 hours of power-shopping. You can sleep for the rest of the weekend, knowing that you’ve accounted for everyone on your gift list. For you, it’s all over but the wrapping. I didn’t set foot in a store yesterday. I’ve picked up some gifts here and there over the past few weeks, but am by no means finished with my Christmas shopping. This means that the next month will be very busy in my house, as shown in the timeline below. Four weeks before Christmas: It’s early, so the “here and there” shopping approach is still valid. Make sure to put up the Advent calendar for the kids; they enjoy it, and it cuts down on the “how long before Christmas” questions. …

Celebrating the Holiday Season in Milton

Miltonians give and receive gifts on Christmas Eve.

Editor's note: Writer Lisa Gentes is engaged to a member of the Hunt family. Lisa is also the editor of Canton Patch. For most people, the holiday season is a time to be with family and friends. On Friday and Saturday plenty of Milton residents celebrated Christmas traditions. The Hunt family of Milton celebrated Christmas with grandparents, parents and grandchildren getting an early visit from Santa. The Hunts gathered on Brook Road to open a few gifts old St. Nick dropped off yesterday on Christmas Eve. The 10 grandchildren, ages six months to five-year-old, tore through the gift wrap in about two minutes. Happy Holidays! If you have photos from your holiday celebrations please share them with Milton Patch. You can post your photos in …
