Forbes House Museum Plans Second Annual Civil War Concert

The Forbes House Museum will host Dixon's Gold for a concert featuring songs from Civil War troops on Saturday, August 12.

Forbes House Museum will hold its second annual Civil War Concert featuring the band, Dixon’s Gold, on Sunday, August 12, at 4 p.m. Dixon’s Gold, comprised of lead musician, Donn Scott Shetler, along with Jill Gross, Bruce Millard, Mitch Nelin and John Moriconi, will cover songs sung by Civil War troops, both north and south. “The music can be traced back to ballads from the old country, England and Ireland,” says Donn Scott Shetler, “since many conscripts were immigrants or descendants of those countries.” During the Civil War, the 69th Infantry, for example, was comprised entirely of Irish immigrants, known for their legendary fearlessness and courage in battle. Town of Milton, Historical Society Plan Veterans Day Events

There will be a pair of noteworthy Veterans Day events in Milton on Thursday and Friday this week.

Milton will honor veterans in a variety of ways this week, on and leading up to, Veterans Day on Friday, November 11. Town officials, members of American Legion Post 114, the Milton Historical Society, Milton High School and many others will participate in a pair of events this week. On Thursday, the Milton Historical Society will commemorate Veterans Day and the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War with a presentation at the Council on Aging. The program, which will begin at 7 p.m., is free and open to the public. Historian Dennis M. Doyle will lead the program, entitled, “Milton in the Civil War,” presenting his research into Milton soldiers.  “Charles W. VIDEO: Forbes House Museum Travels Back to Civil War in Song

Dixon's Gold performed at the Forbes House Museum on Sunday, August 14, giving patrons a feel for Civil War era music.

Over 50 people huddled next to the Forbes House Museum on Sunday afternoon for a Civil War concert performed by Dixon's Gold. The band provided an authentic feel for the era complete with a sing-along portion. The concert was only part of the festivities as the museum opened its doors to the public for several special items. A refurbished silent film from 1924 of Mary Bowditch Forbes hosting a Grand Army of the Republic ceremony at the Lincoln Cabin in Milton that featured Civil War and WWI veterans was shown along with several of Forbes' scrapbooks.

Forbes House Museum Plans Civil War Concert, Exhibits

The Forbes House Museum will host Dixon's Gold, a civil war era band, on Sunday, August 14.

An afternoon of Civil War era activities will take place at Forbes House Museum, 215 Adams Street, on Sunday, August 14, beginning at 2 p.m. From 2 to 4 p.m., special tours of the Museum and the Lincoln Cabin will be offered. Visitors can view a refurbished silent film from 1924 of Mary Bowditch Forbes hosting a G.A.R. ceremony at the Lincoln Cabin in Milton that featured Civil War and WWI veterans. A number of Ms. Forbes’s scrapbooks, dating as far back as 1906, will be on display, along with a special exhibit which chronicles the 1924 G.A.R. Convention in Boston and Milton.
