A Milton Girl Scout and Collicot Elementary student planted 20 sunflowers along Adams Street.
The walk from 9-year-old Sydney O’Toole’s East Milton home to her Nana’s house just across the Quincy line was once a drab, asphalt-heavy journey, but thanks to a community-minded idea and a bit of a green thumb, the stroll is now much brighter. For the second year, Sydney placed sunflowers, grown from seeds, along Adams Street. This year’s 20 pants, which are situated at telephone polls and bus stops, extend from the “Welcome to Quincy” sign down about 200 yards. “I thought they would look nice around town,” said Sydney, a Milton Girl Scout and Collicot Elementary School fourth grader. Sydney’s aunt, Trisha O’Neil, said her niece has received a lot of positive feedback about the flowers, including an article in the Quincy Sun. Sydney has …

Raquel Gallagher, a Collicot School fifth grader, fielded local trivia questions before last week's Milton History Bowl.
Prior to the Milton History Bowl, a Milton trivia contest for adults, one Collicot Elementary School student showcased her local knowledge by answering a crop of questions taken from the fifth grade curriculum. As a warm up for the contest, which was held last week at Milton High, Raquel Gallagher answered Milton-specific questions from Maritta and John Cronin. Raquel faired well on the history and geography questions, with some help from Milton resident Ann Thompson. With impressive knowledge of her hometown, Raquel may be a coveted team member the next time Milton hosts a History Bowl.

The Drawing II students at Milton High School created the 12 by nine foot mural at Collicot.
The Kindergarten/Preschool corridor at Collicot Elementary School has a new wall mural courtesy of the Drawing II students from Milton High School. The students, under the supervision of Milton High art teacher Kassandra Derby, designed, drew and painted the 12 by nine foot mural at Collicot. The design was selected out of four ideas. The wall now features a colorful painting of tree houses complete with jungle animals. After several weeks of work, the mural was unveiled on Friday, May 17.

Students at Collicot Elementary School are working together to walk over 3,000 miles.
Students at Collicot Elementary School are attempting to walk across the country, making stops at six Miltons in other states along the way. Well, not literally, but the students are logging their walking and biking miles as part of the school’s Walk Across America program. MassDOT and the Safe Routes to School program created the initiative that encourages students to collectively walk 3,593 miles over a 12-week period. “It was aggressive to start when we did, but we figured we could make it 3,500 miles,” said Ann Marie Loughnane, who started the project at Collicot. With the weather improving and the statewide Walk or Bike to School Day falling in the timeframe, students have had plenty of opportunities to log their walks and bike rides…
