Selectman Bob Sweeney organized a food drive on the National Day of Service.
Milton Selectman Bob Sweeney and his family spent time at the Milton Food Pantry on the National Day of Service, Saturday, January 19, to deliver items collected from the Milton Friends of Town Farm food drive. "Gert (Bob's wife) and I wanted to participate with our daughter Christina in a meaningful way recognizing the National Day of Service. Unfortunately, hunger is a year round problem not just during the holidays when our charitable spirit abounds,” said Sweeney via a press release. Meet Will Adamczyk, the Milton Public Library’s new director as of January 1. The public is invited to a welcome reception on Sunday, February 3, 2013 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Keys Community Room of the Milton Public Library, 476 Canton Avenue in Milton. Refreshments will be served and the event is sponsored by The Friends of the Milton Public Library. Before his Milton directorship, Mr. Adamczyk had been with the Thomas Crane Public Library in Quincy since 2003 as a Reference Librarian, Circulation Manager, and Readers’ Advisor. Temple Shalom of Milton will celebrate the Jewish holiday of Chanukah with a Community-wide Family Celebration and Fundraiser on Sunday, December 9, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at Pierce Middle School. This family Chanukah event will be under the direction of Education Director Nancy Mollitor and Rabbi Alfred Benjamin. The celebration, sponsored by the Temple’s Rabbi Jerome Weistrop Religious School, will include a talent show, latke tasting, menorah lighting, book swap, raffles, Chanukah songs, and traditional snacks of latkes and sufganiyot (donuts). The final event of Milton’s 350th Anniversary was a gala at the Hoosic Club.
The recognition of Milton’s 350th Anniversary ended last weekend with a successful gala to commemorate a year of celebrations. The Milton 350th Anniversary Gala was held at the Milton Hoosic Club and featured food, a cash bar and music. The year of celebration featured a wide range of events for all ages like fireworks, a parade, concerts and other historical happenings.

Dorothy Pomeroy dreamed of a special church for children – a church where everything would be run by children and everything would be designed for children. In 1937, her dream was realized in the Children’s Church at First Parish in Milton. On Sunday, November 4, the Children’s Church will celebrate its 75th anniversary with a children’s worship service and a children’s concert. Pomeroy, wife of then-minister Vivian Pomeroy, believed that children were bored by conventional Sunday schools. She encouraged the congregation to buy an old schoolhouse and converted it into a little chapel. Forbes House Museum Executive Director Robin Tagliaferri will participate in the Twilight Talk Lecture Series co-sponsored by the Victorian Society in America/New England Chapter and Historic New England, on Tuesday, August 21. Tagliaferri will present “Bringing the Historic House Museum to Life: Forbes Family Stories and Anecdotes.” The lecture will feature short stories about the Forbes and Perkins families and their participation in the American China Trade. After receiving its charge from the Library Trustees in late May, the Milton Public Library Director Search Committee has been working diligently and has held weekly meetings since June 6. The Committee is chaired by Library Trustee Mary Riffe Hiss and is comprised of fellow Trustees Hyacinth Crichlow, Janet Evans and Brendan McLaughlin; Friends representative Elizabeth Buchanan; and Foundation representative Gene Boylan. Since June 1, Assistant Director Dan Haacker has been serving as Interim Director for the Library. The first work of the Committee was outreach to Milton to identify the characteristics important to the community in the next Library Director. The Milton 350th Anniversary Big Event Weekend ended with an inter-faith community concert.
Patriotic and interfaith songs rang out from First Parish Church on Sunday, June 10, during the Milton 350th Anniversary Community Choir Concert. A large community choir united for a selection of songs, while individual choirs also performed pieces. An original work, entitled “Our Glorious Milton,” with words by Emma Jean Moulton and Brother Dennis Slaughter and music by Ralph Vaughan Williams was also performed. The event was organized under the musical direction of George Ashur, Kevin Drake, Dr. Matthew Larson, Emma Jean Moulton, Joyce Painter Rice, Brother Dennis Slaughter and Peter Watchorn. Milton's 350th Anniversary Big Event Weekend concluded Sunday as families gathered at Town Hall for a town-wide picnic.
Milton residents gathered on the Town Green on Sunday for an afternoon of music, magic and more. The Town-Wide Picnic on June 10 was just part of the town’s 350th Anniversary Celebration. Hayrides, a full schedule of family-friendly entertainers and food highlighted the picnic, which took place in front of Town Hall from noon to 3 p.m. Milton 350th Anniversary Committee Chair Lynda-Lee Sheridan called the event, “three hours of fun,” in the days leading up to the picnic. The Bay State Stompers; Dixieland Band and Jedlie’s Totally Interactive Magic Circus took turns wowing the crowd on stage in the Baron Hugo Gazebo.
