Trial Court Community Service Program Workers Assist at Cunningham Park

Participants in the Massachusetts Trial Court Community Service Program worked at Cunningham Park Friday as they have on several projects since 2009.

Participants in the Massachusetts Trial Court Community Service Program were in Milton on Friday, November 16, raking leaves at Cunningham Park near the tennis courts and playground. The program, which is run by the Office of Community Corrections, allows individuals on probation to work off court fees or required community service hours in a supervised atmosphere. The program provides between 35,000 and 40,000 community service hours statewide per month, according to David Skocik, Statewide Program Supervisor-Community Service Program. While some similar programs use individuals serving prison terms, the participants in Milton were all on probation. “These individuals are out on the street,” Skocik said. Skocik added that individuals with…

Milton Residents Enjoy 350th Anniversary Parade and Family Fun Day

Young and old came out to celebrate Milton’s 350th Anniversary.

The 350th Anniversary Parade was a great success, drawing crowds both of Milton residents and those from neighboring areas like Hyde Park and Quincy. Featuring floats from Milton schools, major Milton businesses, marching bands from all around New England, Shriners and Milton organizations like the Kiwanis Club, Yacht Club and Diversity Committee, the community feeling was promoted and felt by parade participants and bystanders alike. “It’s nice to see the mix of heritage and history out here,” said Tricia Cook, a St. Agatha’s teacher and mother of three. Cook’s children attend St. Agatha’s School as well and when asked about Milton’s sense of community, she described it as “strong and invested." Rita Callahan commented that she loved to …

Milton Musings

Staying Cool at the Pool (in Spite of the Rules)

Cool water, gentle breezes and a dash of subterfuge make for the perfect afternoon.

One of my favorite things about summer in Milton is the Cunningham Pool. A breezy oasis in the middle of town, the pool is an instant antidote to the ancient song of summer, plaintively sung by the children of Milton down through the generations: "Moooooom, I'm bored!" An excursion to the pool requires some preparation. Bathing suits, towels, sunblock and the all-important pool tags are the essentials. A blanket to spread on the grass is nice, as is a lawn chair, when I remember one. For those who aren't bothered by pool regulations, snacks can be smuggled in with the towels in the beach bag. And, if I am to stay awake and actually watch my children frolic in the water, an iced coffee is mandatory, rules or no rules. Those who are there …

Historian Shares What Clubs Really Mean to Milton

Anthony Sammarco detailed the past of social clubs at the Milton Historical Society Annual Dinner, May, 18.

Clubbing in Milton isn't what it used to be. Instead of strobe lights and a jumble of bodies, picture raccoons and bird house sales. Imagine men drinking around wooden tables rather than students crowding a lacquered bar. For the purposes of Tuesday night's Milton Historical Society Annual Dinner, a club is "a group of people associating in a common purpose," according to historian Anthony Sammarco, a college professor and prolific author who described the old-fashioned vision to 125 guests at the Milton Hoosic Club. "Clubbing in Milton meant something different than it does today," Sammarco said. "It's a shared pride of history, of Milton and friends." For Sammarco the night was somewhat bittersweet, as he is leaving a long-held post as …
