The Common Hearth series at First Parish in Milton continues on January 23 with a presentation by the Massachusetts Faces of Homelessness Speakers’ Bureau. The program begins at 7 p.m. and will feature currently and formerly homeless speakers, as well as a facilitator from the Massachusetts Housing and Shelter Alliance. Now in its third year, the Speakers’ Bureau is “committed to educating audiences about homelessness by sharing firsthand experiences, breaking stereotypes and misconceptions about homelessness, and inspiring audiences statewide with their calls to action.” The program at First Parish will include interactive dialog and opportunities to ask questions of the speakers. Parishioners received a "reverse offering" and were asked to use the gift for good in the community.

The service on November 11 began as it does every week at First Parish in Milton. However, when it came time for the offering, parishioners were in for a surprise. A pair of ushers circulated the room with collection plates, but this time the congregation was not asked to put money in. Instead, they were invited to take money out. In this “reverse offering,” each person, children as well as adults, was invited to take an envelope from the plate. The envelopes contained between $10 and $50, and came with a simple set of instructions: "Use this gift for good. Share the fact that it came from your church. Return and tell the story." On Saturday, December 3, First Parish in Milton will host its annual Handcrafting Justice sale. This year, the sale has been joined with a plethora of other events, including a book fair, a Christmas tree sale and a free brunch, all to be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at First Parish. Handcrafting Justice is an international project that empowers women in the developing world to lift themselves out of poverty through the creation of unique handmade goods. The sale will feature fair-trade products from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Items include toys, home décor, indigenous art, pottery, bags and purses, cards, gifts and more. As parishioners return from summer vacations and students head back to school, First Parish in Milton will be holding an ingathering service on Sunday, September 11. This joy-filled worship service will be preceded by a free pancake breakfast from 9 to 10 a.m. The service will begin at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend. Pancakes, bacon, juice, coffee, and other breakfast fixings will be served by members of the First Parish Youth Group.
