Share Your Reaction: The Wood Street Overpass Opens Ahead of Schedule

The Wood Street overpass was closed for a month and a half, how do you feel about traffic in East Milton Square now that it reopened?

Construction on the Wood Street overpass in East Milton has wrapped up earlier than expected. While the work, which began on September 7, was initially scheduled as a three-to-four-month project, it was completed in about a month and a half. The overnight construction on the one-way bridge detoured traffic coming from Boston toward East Milton Square to turn left or right on Squantum Street. MassDOT announced last week that the bridge would reopen on Tuesday, November 27, but the project again moved ahead of schedule, opening on Friday, November 23. The detour added to traffic changes in the square with the test run of the new configuration that are planned to become perfect. Has the reopening of Wood Street improved your travels through …

All the comments above are so true. This whole area is a traffic nightmare. I grew up on Wood Street back in the day when kids walked to school. The tragic death of one of my second grade classmates is seared into my memory. He was killed by a big truck as he was crossing near the post office. So this area has been an unmittagated nightmare ever since the expressway cut a canyon through East …   more ›

A Milton intersection is second on the 2010 Top Crash Locations report, released by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation in September. The intersection of Randolph Avenue and Chickatawbut Road was second on the Top 200 High Crash Intersection Locations list, which was compiled using police data and information from the Registry of Motor Vehicles. The lights are VERY poorly programed. They need to be set so that at EVERY light change there are left hand turn arrows going in BOTH directions. The way it is now the north south traffic is given the right of way and folks wanting turn left onto Chickataubut have to fend for themselves. Every morning heading south on Ranolph Ave and going left at the light I witness near accidents. It is very …   more ›

MassDOT to Close Wood Street Overpass for Maintenance

The bridge over I-93 will be closed for the next three or four months, causing a detour in Milton.

A traffic pattern change in East Milton over I-93 will be in effect for three to four months beginning this afternoon while MassDOT completes maintenance on the Wood Street overpass. While the construction is being done, Granite Avenue will be closed at Squantum Street, according to Milton Police Lt. Kevin Foley. The detour will force commuters coming toward East Milton Square to turn left or right on Squantum Street. Foley said a detail officer will be at the intersection and increased patrols will be in the neighborhoods as traffic volumes will likely spike. The work will begin on Monday, September 10, but the detour will go into effect at 4 p.m. on Friday, September 7, to alert motorists of the change. The actual maintenance on the …

I realize I'm coming to this discussion late but it's been 2 months and the nightmare described in the comments above continue. I live near the intersection of this shutdown and can tell you that everything is impacted at almost all hours of the day. There is rare a police detail at granite and squantum. Attempting to turn left onto squantum is life threatening at best, if not impossible. Can't …   more ›

Well, not literally, but the students are logging their walking and biking miles as part of the school’s Walk Across America program. MassDOT and the Safe Routes to School program created the initiative that encourages students to collectively walk 3,593 miles over a 12-week period. “It was aggressive to start when we did, but we figured we could make it 3,500 miles,” said Ann Marie Loughnane, who started the project at Collicot. With the weather improving and the statewide Walk or Bike to School Day falling in the timeframe, students have had plenty of opportunities to log their walks and bike rides…
