Milton Makes a Difference

Destination Shopping at the Hospital

Volunteers make the Milton Hospital Gift Shop more than a place to buy cards.

Ellen Shea is the manager of the gift shop at Milton Hospital. The teacher-turned-buyer-turned-manager has been volunteering her time at the gift shop for forty years. She spoke with columnist Julie Fay about making the shop a destination, working with “the ladies” and improving health care for the community. Tell me what you do at the gift shop. I started out as a paper buyer, purchasing cards and other paper goods to sell at the gift shop. Over the years I became the overall buyer and then the manager, and I still do both of those roles today. I manage a volunteer staff of about 25 fabulous, dedicated ladies, and am responsible for the overall operations of the shop. What kinds of goods do you carry? We have a complete line of Vera …

Milton Hospital Announces New Weight Loss Surgery Program

Milton Hospital recently launched LAP-BAND weight loss surgery program.

Milton Hospital recently announced it has launched a LAP-BAND weight loss surgery program. The LAP-BAND surgery is a minimally invasive, adjustable surgical treatment for obesity. When other weight loss options have continually failed, weight loss surgery can help patients improve their health and enhance their quality of life. The LAP-BAND System uses an adjustable band placed around the upper part of the stomach.  The LAP-BAND reduces the stomach's capacity, restricting the amount of food one is able to eat at one time. By feeling full faster and staying full longer, patients eat less. “Now more than ever, health care providers need to work together to provide education and solutions to combat obesity. Weight loss surgery is not a quick-…
