Joyce recently applauded Milton Public Schools’ efforts to promote healthy eating through its partnership with Whole Foods while highlighting legislation he has reintroduced this session that would teach nutrition and physical fitness to students in grades 1 through 9. “We have seen health care costs rise dramatically and have had to adjust public policy accordingly,” said Joyce.“Last year we passed comprehensive health care cost containment that will save the Commonwealth an estimated $200 billion over the next 15 years. The Milton Partnership for Arts & Cultural Enrichment has begun a "check-off" campaign to gain donations to fund cultural events and programs for Milton Public School students.
M-PACE (Milton Partnership for Arts & Cultural Enrichment) and the Town of Milton Treasurer's Office are once again partnering for a "check-off" campaign to raise funds for artistic and cultural offerings for Milton Public School students. Residents can donate to M-PACE by checking the box on their excise tax bill, which will be distributed in the next few weeks. The program funds field trips like live Shakespeare performances, museums and Boston’s Symphony Hall. M-PACE also brings programs into the schools like “Historia Antiqua” -- a traveling museum of Greek and Roman artifacts; and an interactive geography game show for seventh-graders. “Without the support of M-PACE, many students may not have the opportunity to be exposed to the …

All Milton Public School facilities will be closed Friday through Sunday during Winter Storm Nemo.
The Milton Public Schools will be closed Friday, February 8, due to inclement weather. The decision was made around 1:30 p.m. Thursday as snowfall totals for Winter Storm Nemo are expected to reach a range between 24 and 30 inches. All schools will be closed through the weekend, which means sporting events and Sunday’s Walkathon have been canceled. Snow is expected to begin falling during the morning commute and intensify by noon, making after school travel a potential hazard. The decision to close the schools was made jointly by Superintendent Mary Gormley, Deputy Police Chief Charles Paris and Department of Public Works Director Joe Lynch. Milton High School students went into a “stay in place” on Tuesday after a casing was found in a classroom.
Milton High School students stayed in their classrooms for over three hours on Tuesday while police dogs searched the facility for a weapon. Nothing was found after a student located what could have been a shell casing from a .22 caliber gun or a piece of construction equipment. Milton Police called a “stay in place,” which means all students stayed in classrooms and teaching continued, around 11:20 a.m. The protocol was lifted at 2:50 p.m., according to Superintendent Mary Gormley. First-year Milton High School Principal James Jette was in communication with various groups throughout the incident, Gormley said. The 2013 Milton High School 5th Annual Walkathon is being held on Saturday, February 9, 2013 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Copeland Field House. The theme of the Walkathon is 2013 MHS Walkathon: All in for sports and clubs. Funds raised will be utilized for MHS sports and clubs in the spring and fall of 2013. The Walkathon is an annual event intended to provide financial support to fill the gap between money provided for the sports and clubs programs in the Milton school budget and operational expenses. The school budget addresses about 1/3 of the operating costs of the sports and club programs; another 1/3 is generated in user fees and gate receipts and the remaining 1/3 must be raised through volunteer fundraising. A 10-week after school program will introduce elementary students to the Latin language.
Milton elementary school students will have a unique opportunity to learn Latin in a new after school program presented at the Milton Public Schools and Milton Community Schools. The program, which is open to children in grades one through five, will begin February 7, and run for 10 weeks from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. at Colicot/Cunningham. Matthew Webb, a Milton resident and Milton High School Latin teacher, will lead the program, teaching students Latin words for animals, colors, greetings, parts of the body, family members, action verbs and more. Superintendent Mary C. Gormley announced this week that Stephanie Nephew will be returning to her position as principal of the Glover as part of an arranged job-share. Nephew will serve as co-principal with Drew Echelson, who has been serving as principal since the beginning of the school year. The transition will take place on Monday, January 7th. Nephew and Echelson will share the roles and responsibilities of the Glover principalship. The two have communicated regularly during the school year on issues regarding students, staff and curriculum related to the Glover. The job share will allow Echelson an opportunity to work on his doctoral studies, while also allowing Nephew the chance to transition back into her former position. …

Milton Public Schools Superintendent Mary Gormley shared information about school safety and grief counseling after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting this morning.
Following an incident where nearly 30 people, including at least 18 children were killed in a Newtown, Conn. elementary school, Milton Public Schools Superintendent Mary Gormley released a statement about school safety and how parents can discuss the tragedy with their children. “We would like to assure our parents and guardians safety is a priority of the Milton Public Schools,” Gormley wrote on blog.miltonps.org. “We treat each and every student here in the Milton Public Schools as if they were our own, and we regularly schedule lockdown drills, fire drills and other various safety precautions throughout the year, in coordination with the Milton Police and Fire Department.” In the statement, which was released this afternoon, Gormley …

District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey has presented Milton High senior R. Dan Halloran one of just 23 Peer Leadership Recognition awards given county-wide for 2012. “The strength and health of school communities derives largely from the students who lead by example,” District Attorney Morrissey said after presenting the award at his 2012 Peer Leadership Conference, held in Norwood recently. “Good teachers and thoughtful administrators are important, but it is students like Dan often doing the work.” Halloran was nominated by faculty member Yolanda Beech, who called him “a natural born leader.” Halloran is president of the Spanish Club and Dramatics Society and participates in the Student Leaders program at the school.
