Academic teams from 95 public high schools across Massachusetts, including a group from Milton High School, will gather at WGBH in Brighton on November 4 for a chance to compete on season four of High School Quiz Show. Hosted by Billy Costa, the Emmy Award-winning, fast-paced game show showcases teens from across the Commonwealth and celebrates academic achievement. On “Super Sunday,” each academic team of four students will take an identical oral quiz of 100 questions. From the 95 schools, the top 16 teams will advance to appear on the televised show, a single-elimination, bracketed academic tournament that includes eight qualifying matches, quarterfinals, semifinals and a state championship match. Superintendent Mary Gormley announced Monday night that school will be in session on Tuesday, October 30.
After being closed Monday due to inclement weather, the Milton Public Schools will likely be open on Tuesday, October 30, as the region recovers from Hurricane Sandy. Superintendent Mary Gormley announced that the district would hold classes Tuesday via http://blog.miltonps.org/ on Monday night. Earlier today, Gormley said the decision to open or close the schools was would be made based on consultation with Police Chief Richard Wells and DPW Director Joe Lynch. If necessary, a cap and lottery system will be applied to the grade one French Immersion program beginning in the 2013-2014 School Year.
The Milton School Committee unanimously accepted a proposal by Superintendent Mary Gormley to institute a cap and lottery system on the first grade French Immersion program at a meeting on Wednesday, October 17. The cap on French Immersion will not grandfather in incoming kindergarteners that have siblings in the program. The proposed lottery/capping plan for grade one French Immersion will be implemented for the 2013-2014 School Year. The cap for next year would be a maximum of 182 French students with seven full classes of 26 students. The breakdown includes two classes at Glover School, two at Collicot, one at Tucker School and, with full interest in enrollment, two at Cunningham School. The School Committee, which is considering a new cap/lottery system on French Immersion, hosted a well-attended information session on Tuesday. The committee is scheduled to vote on the proposal tonight.
Over 150 parents and guardians joined the Milton School Committee at Milton High School on Tuesday, October 16, for a special session about the proposed cap/lottery on the first grade French Immersion Program. The three and a half hour meeting featured 44 speakers from the community and answers primarily from Superintendent Mary Gormley and School Committee Chair Glenn Pavlicek. Parents with widely different experiences and beliefs supported and opposed the cap on French Immersion. While some offered concrete alternatives, many others implored the School Committee to delay their upcoming vote to allow for more public discussion. The Fruit Center Marketplace is pleased to announce a fundraising program benefitting nineteen Milton and Hingham schools. From Monday, November 5 through Friday, November 9, customers will be able to download a shopping voucher from the Fruit Center’s website designating which participating school they wish to support when they shop. Customers can present their vouchers at the checkout as many times as they like during the fundraising week. At the end of the fundraising week, the Fruit Center will tally all purchases and donate 20% of the total sales to the designated school. A group of 52 students from Pierce Middle School assembled in the school library yesterday for a special luncheon in their honor. The students were being recognized for having achieved a “280” -- or perfect score on one of their MCAS exams. Results of the standardized tests -- taken last spring -- were recently released earlier this month and Principal Karen Spaulding wasted no time in honoring those who achieved the top score. “You are spectacular,” she told the group as they enjoyed their special lunch. “I think your accomplishments are pretty remarkable.” Superintendent Mary Gormley and Assistant Superintendent John Phelan attended the ceremony and gave out certificates to every member of the “280 Club.” “You did not get these scores …

Milton High School proudly presents the Broadway musical comedy "Hairspray" based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters. Students at Milton's Cunningham Elementary School participated in International Walk to School Day.
Students and parents from Cunningham Elementary School united with school-aged children around the world for International Walk to School Day (iWalk) on Wednesday, October 3. Students in Milton braved an overcast morning to participate in the annual event. “Since 2000, schools throughout the world come together on the first Wednesday of October to take part in iWalk, a global event that builds awareness for walking as a safe, sustainable, active and fun mode of transportation to and from school,” said Lorie White, Cunningham PTO.
