A group of 52 students from Pierce Middle School assembled in the school library yesterday for a special luncheon in their honor. The students were being recognized for having achieved a “280” -- or perfect score on one of their MCAS exams. Results of the standardized tests -- taken last spring -- were recently released earlier this month and Principal Karen Spaulding wasted no time in honoring those who achieved the top score. “You are spectacular,” she told the group as they enjoyed their special lunch. “I think your accomplishments are pretty remarkable.” Superintendent Mary Gormley and Assistant Superintendent John Phelan attended the ceremony and gave out certificates to every member of the “280 Club.” “You did not get these scores …

After serving as the Principal at Cunnigham Elementary School for the past two years, Dr. Karen Spaulding is taking the Principal job at Pierce Middle School.
Dr. Karen Spaulding is going back to middle school. After two years as Principal of Cunningham Elementary School, Spaulding will take the helm at Pierce Middle School. The middle school level is where she spent most of her career and Pierce is the first school she worked at in Milton. The new principal served as an assistant from 2008 to 2010 before she accepted the principalship at Cunningham. Spaulding, who officially started on July 1, is replacing James Jette at Pierce Middle School. Jette accepted the principal position at Milton High School. While Spaulding is familiar with the school and the leadership initiatives of the district, she said Jette has been instrumental in the transition thus far. “James Jette is both an incredible …

Editor and author Bill Thompson III participated in Pierce Middle School's Birding Day, an event organized by science teacher Jeff Stoodt and partially funded by the Milton Foundation for Education.
As 22 Pierce Middle School students, clutching birding guidebooks and binoculars looked on, a Baltimore Oriole continued construction on a nest in the Blue Hills Reservation’s Fowl Meadow. A short time later, Bill Thompson III, a national birding expert and author of the student’s reference book, The Young Birder’s Guide to Birds of Eastern North America, used a smart phone to play the calls of the Yellow Warbler and Cat Bird that were just out of view, along the trail. Thompson, an Ohio resident and the editor of Bird Watcher’s Digest and the author of several books, including the recently released The Young Birder’s Guide to Birds of North America, was in Milton for Pierce Middle School’s Birding Day. Over the course of the day, all of …

How do you get kids away from their screens and outdoors into nature? Jeff Stoodt, sixth-grade science teacher at Pierce Middle School in Milton thinks birding might be the answer. He recently received a grant from the Milton Foundation for Education that provided him with the funds to hold a Birding Day for all the students on his team. Buses will take the students to nearby Fowl Meadow, in the Blue Hills, and the students will use brand new binoculars to identify birds. Jeff’s bringing in national birding expert Bill Thompson III to help teach the kids about the birds that are passing through at this peak migration time, as well as those that are settling in to raise a family. Bill is the editor of the monthly magazine Bird Watcher’s …

The competition was tough onstage in the Pierce Middle School Auditorium during the recent National Geographic Geography Bee. A dozen finalists, who had qualified in their own classrooms, were joined at the last minute by a “wild card” contestant chosen randomly from the audience. In the end, sixth-grader Al Lenz pulled off the victory, capturing the Pierce title of Geography Bee winner, with Edwin Duprevil landing second place. The bee was organized by teachers Kelly Connell, Mike Cleary and Marianne Dann. “Our teachers did a wonderful job planning an event that challenges all the students,” said Amy Gale, Curriculum Coordinator at Pierce Middle School. “Our winner, Al Lenz, was able to answer questions that far exceeded our expectations…

A group of 53 students from Pierce Middle School assembled in the school library last week for a special luncheon in their honor. The students were being recognized for having achieved a “280” -- or perfect score on one of their MCAS exams. Results of the standardized tests -- taken last spring -- were recently released and the Pierce Middle School saw a huge increase in the number of students who attained a perfect score. Last year’s “280” Luncheon included 31 students. Emily Ayre, a guidance counselor at Pierce Middle School, passed away on August 11, just before her third year on the job.
As students and staff returned to Pierce Middle School on Wednesday, there was one face missing from the tight-knit school community, guidance counselor Emily Ayre. Ayre passed away unexpectedly on August 11, nearly two years to the day after she interviewed at Pierce Middle School. “When we interviewed her, she was by far the unanimous candidate,” recalled Pierce Principal James Jette. Ayre acclimated immediately to her position as the sixth grade guidance counselor her first year. Last year, per the guidance department rotation, she moved with those students to seventh grade and was preparing to begin the 2011-2012 school year with those same students in eighth grade. Jette described the Woodbury Connecticut native as a vibrant, …
