St. Agatha Parish in Milton will be sponsoring a three day mission on February 26 to 28 from 7 to 8 p.m. each night. The theme of the mission is “Faith in Challenging Times,” and people of all denominations and parishes are warmly invited to attend. The mission will be held in the main church with light refreshments immediately following on the first and third nights. Described as a “Catholic Revival,” the mission is a time of special Gospel-based preaching and prayer and is being held during the Lenten season. Each night will have its own focus which will include the Sacrament of Reconciliation on the second night and Mass on the concluding night. The mission will be conducted by Fr. Rev. Peter Casey, St. Agatha Parish, shares his thoughts on the term of Pope Benedict XVI and his resignation.
Like many, Rev. Peter Casey of St. Agatha Parish, was caught off guard by Monday morning’s announcement that Pope Benedict XVI will be resigning as pope on February 28. “Obviously, I was surprised,” said Rev. Casey, who heard about the pope’s resignation from another priest. Pope Benedict XVI, who is 85 years old, has been in the office for less than eight years. He is retiring, the first time a pope has done so in 600 years, due to health concerns and age. "I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise” of the position, the pope said in a statement, according to the New York Times. Representatives from the Faces of Homelessness Speakers’ Bureau will speak at St. Agatha Parish on Friday, March 9.
The Justice and Peace Advisory Board at St. Agatha Parish will face the issue of homelessness on Friday, March 9, as they welcome speakers from the National Coalition for the Homeless. According to their website, “The Faces of Homelessness Speakers’ Bureau is a program of the National Coalition for the Homeless that is comprised of people who are or have been homeless and works to educate the public about homelessness and what can be done to end it.” Mary Gallagher, Pastoral Associate, said the event at St. Agatha will feature two or three homeless or formerly homeless speakers. Jack Riley is the director of operations at St. Agatha Parish in Milton. The 30-year member of the parish also volunteers to oversee its annual gift drive for My Brother’s Keeper, a local charity that provides Christmas presents for approximately 2,500 needy families in eastern Massachusetts. Riley spoke with columnist Julie Fay about responding to the call to love one’s neighbor. Describe the giving tree at St. Agatha’s. For the past 20 years, we have had a giving tree at the church during Advent (the few weeks before Christmas.) The parish takes responsibility for sixty families who have asked My Brother’s Keeper for help.
