Pan-Mass Challenge Cyclist Rides out of Gratitude

Milton resident Brendan McLaughlin has participated in eight Pan-Massachusetts Challenges, a 170-mile bike ride that benefits the Dana Farber Cancer Institute's Jimmy Fund.

The riders in the 33rd Annual Pan-Massachusetts Challenge, a charity bike-a-thon that took place on August 4 and 5, all have their reasons to support the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund. Milton resident Brendan McLaughlin rode the 170-mile, two-day route from Wellesley to Provincetown, out of gratitude. For the eighth time, McLaughlin rode for previous cancer patients, for doctors, for nurses and for hope. The McLaughlin family’s dedication to the cause supported by the weekend trek across the state began with a cancer diagnosis in 1994. Brendan and his wife Mary McLaughlin, who participated in the PMC from 2001 to 2004 and in 2006 and 2007, took their then two-year old son Conor to the doctor for a routine check-up. …

Successful Yard Sale Benefits Dana Farber Cancer Institute

The Dolan family raised $3,000 for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute at a yard sale on July 30.

One family’s effort to raise money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute through a yard sale on Saturday, July 30 netted $3,000. The Dolan family'syard sale on Brook Road was in honor of Kathy Dolan Newberry, who passed away from sarcoma in October 2010. Kathy’s life was prolonged by doctors at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute so when her sisters, Terry Dolan and Martha Dolan Cosgrove, decided to hold a yard sale they directed the funds to the hospital. Before the sale, Terry predicted the profits would be between $650 and $750 and Martha guessed $1,000. The event ended up pulling in $1,500. “Martha and I will match that amount, so thanks to the generosity of friends, neighbors and bargain shoppers from all over, we will be sending Dana …

Milton Family Honors Late Sister with Yard Sale to Benefit Dana Farber

The family of Kathy Dolan Newberry is planning a yard sale for Saturday, July 30, at 525 Brook Rd., to benefit the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund.

Whether it’s in anticipation of a move or a late foray into spring-cleaning, all of us can find plenty of items to part with. The urge to de-clutter, paired with the loss of a family member, inspired the unique event of a charity yard sale for one Milton family. On Saturday, July 30, several members of the Dolan family will pool their items for a multi-family yard sale to benefit the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund, all in honor of Kathy Dolan Newberry, who lost her battle with a rare form of sarcoma in October 2010. Before she passed away, a physician who specializes in that rare form of cancer treated Kathy, and she only had to travel to the Boston-based Dana Farber Cancer Institute. “She lived for five years, which is a …

A Celtic Crossing: Musicians Unite for a Charitable Journey

For the fifth year, Irish musicians from Milton and beyond gathered for an evening of entertainment to benefit the Jimmy Fund and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

A large crowd packed the Milton High School Auditorium on Saturday, April 16, for the fifth anniversary of A Celtic Crossing. The evening of Irish song and dance has grown in popularity over the years and has raised over $50,000 for the Jimmy Fund and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute since its start. The event, which was hosted by John Fitzgerald, featured several Milton residents like Pauline Wells, who sang with Devri, and George Geary, who joined the Boston Police Gaelic Column of Pipes and Drums. Irish band Devri was also joined by singer Leah Fox. The O'Dwyer School of Irish Dancing performed at this year's festivities as well, marking their fifth year participating.
