A Milton resident was recently contacted by a phone scammer.
The Milton Police Department recently released a Facebook statement warning residents about a phone scam that has become common in the Boston area. On Saturday, a Milton resident was called by a male with a heavy foreign accent inquiring about a loan payment. According to the statement, the caller said he was investigating the non-payment of a loan. The call came from 904-701-9569.The phone number is associated with a fake company that phones people about defaulting on a loan. The Milton Police have reported this group. "If this person calls you, hang up immediately, this is a scam," reads the MPD statement.

Senior citizens from Milton and the South Shore have been victimized by phone scammers using different stories to get money.
Just two weeks ago, an elderly Milton resident was scammed out of several thousand dollars when a person called to inform her she’d won a luxury car, one “better than a Cadillac.” Milton Council on Aging Director Mary Ann Sullivan said the East Milton resident wired the requested $1,000 to the caller. She sent money multiple times, to the point she lost so much her phone was shut off. No car was ever sent. “You’re preying on people, who a lot of times, don’t have someone to talk to,” Sullivan said of the scammers. This scam is one in a string of calls relying on different tactics. Police say once the scammers have a newly purchased Green Dot card number and the PIN, they can instantly steal their victim's money.
Police are warning South Shore senior citizens about an attempted phone scam after an elderly South Hingham resident was nearly the victim of one on Wednesday. Hinham police say the resident was the target of what is known to police as the the "Green Dot Scam" or "Walgreens Green Dot Scam." The Green Dot refers to the company name on prepaid debit/credit cards that are for sale at numerous stores, including Walgreens. On Wednesday morning, the 87-year-old resident received a call from the number (876) 281-2287, telling he had won a car and it would be delivered today to his house as long as he bought a Green Dot card for $150 and provided the Green Dot card information over the phone.
